Just renovate the Zoo in the same location. BR zoo sucks. No elephants, lions, bears, crocodiles, hippos, sea lions, or whales and dolphins. BR should remodel after san diego zoo

Aquarium of America is a $54mil project.
That was back in the early 90s. Cost of construction and materials has gone up a lot since then.

I'll add that to the list of things BR must have. I'll put it right there with a loop, a new bridge, deeper City Park Lakes, high speed rail to New Orleans, Tram between LSU and downtown, new relocated zoo, an ER in NBR, buses that run on time and don't breakdown, and a bigger and better COA.

There just seems like so much untapped potential on the riverfront.

They are building this bad boy 5 minutes from my house and I have never been so excited about an aquarium as I am about this one. Will be the largest aquarium in the southwest. 175 million dollar project.

The escalator going into the aquarium tank looks like it will be cool as well

BR just doesn't have the tourist base to support how expensive an aquarium is(not even a smaller scale one). Why would a business build an aquarium...less than 100 miles from another nice aquarium that is in the biggest tourist city in that state?

This as well.

Is BR even a "major" city? The population is what? About 250k?

Here is a list of cities ranked by population. What are any of the cities with a similar population able to support? LINK

BatonRouge zoo should be moved to the "river district" site on Nicholson between downtown and lsu.

I disagree. The Aquarium of the Americas is a great aquarium for it's size.

They should get rid of the downtown development guy, David Rhore (sp?). They've been pumping money downtown for decades and we ain't even got a good restaurant out of it, unless you frickers count Raising Canes.

The same discussion has come up in Jackson. Such a move is estimated to cost over $100 million.

The land acquisitions alone in BR would be a bitch. Where does the money come from?

It would be quicker and cheaper if the Mayor, City Council, and Community made a major effort to improve the zoo and raise money for it. It has room to expand. Its just been neglected for quite some time. Putting it downtown doesn't mean it won't be neglected again.
