I work in behavioral health and cannot agree with this enough. Just because we got rid of them doesn’t mean we don’t need them.

50 years of 'mainstreaming' and medicating the mentally ill has devastated this country. Those tens or hundreds of thousands of people released from institutions in the 60's and 70's have reproduced and handed down their defective genetics to millions or tens of millions of descendants since, and we're all paying the price.

Spending on mental health has dramatically decreased over the last 20 plus years as everyone screamed it was a waste of money and demanded fiscal reform. Facilities were closed and patients released right when opioids, crack and herion were on a meteoric rise. We complain about all the “bums” and homeless at every gas station, parking lot and interstate interchange yet we refuse to realize we have to pay for certain things in order to get this epidemic under control.
Cue the “I’m not paying until they learn not to overspend” crowd.

Wife works in an ER. ER workers have to deal with some of the most fricked up people in society and can be very vulnerable doing so.

A word of caution as well. The news reporting on this has not gotten the whole story right. Be careful in drawing conclusions about what happened based on the information in the media right now.
The information is from he autopsy report and from people who are contacting the news with their version of he events. People who contact news stations often have an agenda. Either as disgruntled employees or ex employees or some other reason. The hospital cannot speak freely about what happened and give a complete picture due to a whole host of confidentiality and privacy laws.

Preach it, brother. I see it everyday at our local podunk hospital.
I can only imagine how bad it is in the larger towns and cities.

What was she doing working at that zoo and spare me "making a difference"? She should have been somehwere more fitting and not as zooish. Absolutely terrible way to go.

Yes- horrible way for anyone to die. As to why she was working there- I can only guess. But I always tell people either you are made for behavioral health or not. You either love it or hate it. And if you love it, even on the worst days it is rewarding. And fun. And if you aren’t made that way, there’s nothing I can say to make you understand. I know that’s won’t be a satisfying answer but I think it is likely the closest thing to the truth.

I know Lynne. It's one thing to die unexpectedly. People die of PEs fairly regularly. It's another thing for it to be brought on by an altercation with a patient.

So glad my MIL no longer works on that ward, as she is a psych nurse in semi-retirement.
She and her husband both used to work at Meadowwood, IIRC, and had some stories about the kinds of kids they dealt with.
