The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) selected the East Baton Rouge Parish Housing Authority (EBRPHA), City of Baton Rouge and the East Baton Rouge Redevelopment Authority (EBR Redevelopment Authority) as this year’s Choice Neighborhoods Implementation (CNI) Grant Finalist.

HUD received 32 grant applications and selected 4 applicants as finalists. HUD officials will visit a Baton Rouge site visit on Feb. 20 to better understand the city’s proposed transformation plan, which involved converting the East Fairfield, Smiley Heights and Melrose East neighborhoods into an “urban creative community.”

They are going to use this to help develop the area around the new BRCC property.

I thought for sure that the area was ideal for industrial and flex space. I think they want to put housing there.

Seems like a waste of money on that area. You can't polish a turd.

At first I thought you meant Baton Rouge Country Club and I had some faux outrage that HUD residents would be surrounding the club.

What better way to revitalize a city than to create an area that will concentrate crime and keep people dependent on the government

After city officials steal/waste $29 million, what would they do with the remaining $1 million?

Exactly. Low cost housing isn't going to gentrify or improve the area.

They are throwing up a big arse rent controlled apartment complex across from L'auberge too. It will be interesting to see how that works out.

They either don't care about fixing up the place or they're too dumb to realize what the end result will be. From the politician's standpoint, this is the stuff that effectively farms votes. The metrics they use as signs of success are the same metrics that typically indicate failure.

You think pumping money into a section 8 complex is improving the area?

More Section 8 doesn’t solve any problems.
