City-parish officials and the Downtown Development District are exploring several options to accommodate Viking River Cruises vessels that will begin stopping in Baton Rouge in the fall of 2020.
Though it’s still more than a year away, DDD Executive Director Davis Rhorer says it will take that long to prepare a space for the popular river cruisers, which will bring several hundred additional tourists per year to the downtown riverfront.
Currently, several locations are under consideration, including the existing City Dock, the two docks currently occupied by the two downtown riverboat casinos and a fourth location further downriver.
Rhorer says the existing dock is a prime location, but it would need to be expanded, as it already accommodates several paddlewheelers that regularly stop in Baton Rouge.
The docks home to the Belle of Baton Rouge and the Hollywood Casino are also attractive options. However, one of the floating casinos would first have to take advantage of a new state law that allows riverboat casinos to move onshore—and it’s not clear that will happen.
I figured they would just use the paperclip, but it can only take a couple of boats at a time.

I’ve been interested in river cruises out of STL, but I’ve been surprised by the expense. (Not OT baller yet) I think it would be fun to cruise down to BR and New Orleans.

Upstream from BR is mostly undeveloped. And some people are actually interested in looking at industrial plants.

They are very expensive, and I hear that the clientele is pretty old.

Aunt and Uncle did one from STL to Natchez. Said they enjoyed it.
Was 90% people over 60 though.

One of our customers went on a Rhine cruise with his family. It was alright, but he was pissed that he got a tiny stateroom while his daughter and her husband got a suite, since he was paying for the whole thing.

Would be cool to stop in Natchez, Vicksburg, Baton Rouge, Memphis, St Louis, etc.
Seems like you'd see nothing but levees for a lot of the cruise though.

I would take a river cruise from Baton Rouge to the north. South of Baton Rouge cruise, nope.

Will be an older crowd on those cruises. They have a cool historical appeal, but they are very slow and pricey.

The levees are set back from the river a good distance, so you'd see trees, birds, etc.
You gotta remember we're used to seeing this stuff. It would be brand new to somebody going on a river cruise. If you grew up in Jackson Hole you might think the Tetons were pretty, but you probably wouldn't be awestruck.
