You laugh, but there are tourists that visit shithole towns in the Delta. A while back I passed by Frogmore Plantation outside of Jonesville and saw two big tour buses parked there, and not at the antebellum home, which is nothing special as far as plantation houses go. They were touring the agricultural operation. People are interested in all kind of shite, especially if it's new and unfamiliar.

ETA: I know someone who's a professor at a college in Ohio and they run a "Civil Right History Tour" every spring break. A bunch of SJW students in a van for ten days hitting all the historic sites. I followed their twitter last year. Some of it was legit interesting, but some of it was them sitting around eating "soul food" (somebody slapped a piece of fried chicken and a storebought roll on a plastic plate and probably sold it to them for about $10 each) and talking about how great it was.
