Keep a softball in the glove and wrap it closed with a belt. Not a baseball, you will lose all the gloves shape.

Young kids with smaller hands need to use two hands to catch. If you teach him to cover the ball with the second hand after it hits the glove, the ball won’t pop out.

Without seeing it, it’s hard to say. However, my future big leaguer had a glove once that was similar. I am pretty sure it was operator failure on my part breaking it in. Either way, we threw it in the trash and started over.

bought my 9-year-old a good leather Rawlings baseball glove a year ago. It’s well broken in now,

As someone else mentioned this is your problem. At this age, they will outgrow a “good” glove by the time it’s properly broken in. I intentionally buy my kids cheaper gloves bc they break in much quicker.

Rawlings Prodigy Series is a good option bc it has the “sure catch” hinge. Most brands have some sort of glove with a hinge that allows them to make the squeeze much easier for younger players. Look for that.

If he can pitch and catch without constantly dropping the ball, then he just sucks at fielding. Put him in the outfield.

Sounds like he needs to be a DH.

His hand is probably not strong enough yet to close the glove, even though it’s broken in. It happens with most players at that age. He needs a different glove, one with built-in hinge that he can close more easily. Also teaching him to use his throwing hand to help close the glove will help.

+1

I see it all the time at the park….kid gets a new glove (usually too big for them) and they cannot squeeze it at all. The hinge is key.

the glove seems almost slippery. Is there a way to treat a baseball glove to make it more sticky?

the leather being "slick" shouldn't matter if the glove is closing in around the ball when it is caught. break it in more and get the pocket formed better. break in the seam at the wrist to allow it to close more.

go watch some youtube videos of breaking in gloves. most 9 year olds aren't throwing hard enough on their own to really get a glove broken in.

Shift your hand over. No seriously.

Put your ring finger and pinky in the pinky slot, middle finger in the ring finger slot and index finger in the middle finger slot. Leave the index finger slot if the glove unoccupied. Do it.
