If you were walking along the beach and found a duffle bag full of money would you give it to the police?

I wouldn't return it. I would just assume that the Nigerian prince finally came through after all of those emails he sent me.

The bank may miss it for a few days while things are pending but I doubt it doesn't throw a red flag by the end of the month.

the case in the OP shows the money deposited is from 2012. large Bank bureaucracy works strangely. If the system thinks the transaction was legit, it wouldn't be found until forensic auditors are involved.

That is what I'd do, but they'd get the government to find you and kill you

Isn't that essentially what banks do?

Yes, all those non-extradition countries that have honest governments/police that definitely wouldn't put a bullet in a gringo's head after torturing him to transfer his money into their coffers.

I assumed that he would have been earning interest being that it was such a large amount. My account starts earning interest once you get over a certain amount.

He was 16. I doubt he had an interest earning student account.
