Sauntore Thomas was trying to open a savings account and deposit checks – ironically from a recent race discrimination lawsuit.

According to the complaint, the assistant branch manager wouldn’t help him.

Instead, he called the police, accusing Thomas of attempting to deposit fraudulent checks. The bank also opened a fraud investigation.

“Ten minutes later, Livonia police walk in. And they said ‘Hey sir can we talk to you? And I was shocked, I was like who, me?'” said Thomas.

“There’s no doubt in my mind they could have determined that on their own. I mean, call the bank that issued the check. You’re a bank. Isn’t that what you’re there to do? Something else was afoot here. And in my opinion there’s only one thing – banking while black,” said Thomas’ attorney, Deborah Gordon.

I feel sorry for the next bank he uses. Cashing two large settlement checks is definitely gonna look shady as frick.

If it's a savings account, reg cc doesn't apply and you can put whatever length hold you want. Assistant branch manager is about to be out of a job.

Dude is not wrong. All they had to do is call the issuing bank....assuming there is not more to the story.

I hope he gets another huge check to deposit. He should keep this bank, because they’d treat him like their top client after this.

Well, that's unfortunate.

Lawyer should give him a discount on the next contingency fee bc he already has the papers drafted.

Worked at Regions. Standard procedure for a bigass check deposit that feels shady is to call the issuer of the check and make sure it's legit. If they skipped that part altogether and went straight to 911, yeah this is racist as shite.

What’s racist about it? Prejudice maybe but nothing racist

It shouldn’t have been any big deal.. I’ve had a bank call me when a client was trying to deposit or cash a settlement check drawn on my trust account. I told the bank it was not a problem and that was that. Calling the fuzz was ridiculous. Responding officers wouldn’t be in any more of a position to determine the
Legitimacy of the checks. Plus, there’s nothing in the facts to warrant a serious suspicion of fraud.

Read my post. You call the issuer of the check, not the cops.

How is it prejudice, but not racist? You can't make that determination from just the story. Can you read their minds? A picture of the dude might help, did he go in there looking like a bum? Then you could say prejudice, but I'm not sure what else
