quote:

A fungus that has wreaked havoc on banana plantations in the Eastern Hemisphere has, despite years of preventative efforts, arrived in the Americas.

quote:

The discovery of the fungus represents a potential impending disaster for bananas as both a food source and an export commodity. Panama disease Tropical Race 4—or TR4—is an infection of the banana plant by the fungus Fusarium odoratissimum. Although bananas produced in infected soil are not unsafe for humans, infected plants eventually stop bearing fruit.

quote:

No known fungicide or biocontrol measure has proven effective against TR4.

First they came for avocados. Now it's bananas.

This injustice will not stand.

I won't find the higher prices a-peeling.

Personally speaking, you can eat fungi for quite some time with no problem.

Someone forgot to tell my local Walmart. The banana stand takes up about 3/4 of the produce section not in the cooler. I've never seen so many bananas in one spot. Damn table is huge.

I have six small stems of bananas on my trees now. They are well formed and looking good. Going to have a good crop of oranges also.

Note this is mainly the Cavendish species we are all used to seeing. It has happened before with the primary export food species in the 60s which was the Gros Michel.

All they grow is one type of banana, the Cavendish. So they shouldn't be shocked this is happening.

Bring on the Apple and Ice Cream bananas!
