This wreck was on video. There will be no doubt as to the reason why it happened. I feel like it could have been prevented though.

How do you know there is video? Other than the STPSO deputy's dashcam, I can't think of any other video.

They should upgrade to night vision for those cameras.

I was going to say, service roads would be the biggest thing they need. Almost half of the traffic in that area could stay off the interstate if you could get from 190 to 21 on the service road.

Ever since they put up that new entrance ramp that gets on right before the river, there is almost always a traffic jam right there.

1) Cars getting on are looking at the bridge and cars already on interstate
2) People freak out about the bridge, and slam on their brakes
3) No traffic engineer should ever assume that anyone would merge at the proper speed

Typical Louisiana traffic engineering. Spend boatloads of money to do something that is obviously wrong to even laymen

I drive this every single day and never can figure out WTF is wrong. Literally a dead stop before that Tchefuncta river overpass and then 70mph right after

Same here. For the life of me I can’t figure out why a little Tchefuncta River bridge backs up traffic both ways before the bridge.

Last week in this same area I saw two different big rigs do the same shite that very easily could’ve cause an accicent.

Both were parked on shoulder stopped
Instead of accelereting on shoulder and merging they go from stopped to merging.

How long does it take 18wheeler go from stopped to 70?
I just thought this myself, what a dumbass MF. No wonder accidents happen.

Need new bridges across the river.

This is the first real bad wreck in that area

I have a scar on my neck from an 8 car pileup at the bridge two years ago that says this statement is false.
We were coming over the overpass and the traffic slowed, and then picked back up, we were moving just fine at the on ramp, my son was with me and he put an altoid on the top of my RTIC cup in my console. In the 2, maybe 3 seconds max that it took me to look down and pick it up, I looked up and the traffic was dead stopped at the bridge and we hit. It’s the bridge that causes the backup, because people can’t see over it and don’t leave themselves enough space to stop if something is over the other side, so they just slowdown and the traffic stops instead. Accidents happen, but the rate they happen there is alarming, and something needs to be done, even if it’s just to elevate the roadway from the overpass to the bridge to help the sight line. I damn near died and after spending months in a neck brace with parts of my scalp stapled together I definitely leave way more room now than I ever did and I drive defensively, always calculating who is around me and what I should do if they mess up, and the amount of distracted drivers on the road next to me terrifies me now. If it can happen in 2 seconds, then what can happen in the time it takes you to dial a phone number? Read a text? Start your playlist?

You were one of the people I was referencing. I was told about your accident by your cousin and the one your other cousin was in right at that on ramp.

When I said real bad it wasn't o minimize yours or any other accidents. I just don't recall any there that was as bad as yesterday. But if something isn't done there will be more deaths there.

The more and more I see ppl on the road playing with their phones makes me believe that we need a total change. maybe someway they can disable all cell phones when traveling over 15 mph.

I go the long way home everyday yo avoid this. I can't tell you the last time I was there though I drive those roads every single day. It's just built too stupid and is too dangerous. I'll leave earlier if I have to to avoid this. Very sad.

Yessss agreed on that merge. Every time I get to it I panic
If true, this is part of the problem. People who are mediocre drivers, braking or fearful of merging cars.

I think it happens so much that it’s easy to forget them unless it directly effects you, because it’s just common, and it takes something as fatal as yesterday’s to make people remember it who who weren’t involved in it. It will probably take someone dying who is important or close to someone important to make a change though, which is the saddest part.
I usually feel like I’m mostly over it, and that the way I drive now is just an adjustment, but I’d be lying if I said that looking at those pictures from yesterday didn’t give me the cold sweats and a very accurate sense of gratitude for the instinct of being able to get out of traffic after we hit.
I’m very grateful that no one died in our accident, and that mine were the most significant Injuries. I can deal with anything that happens to me, I couldn’t deal with having caused someone else to lose their life. If the person responsible for the accident yesterday survived I imagine that’s going to be the toughest part for them to deal with.

I drive it monday-thursday and when I had to go through there in the afternoon I can honestly admit it scares me. Even dealing with the west bound side is a mess. I have been considering just taking the hwy 190-hwy 22 route in the evening on the way home.

They put that onramp there to recycle an existing onramp from an old rest area. That whole area was developed and they didn't have to do much to install onramps. I'm sure they didn't give two shits about traffic flow through that stretch.

There's already a "loop" of sorts, with Brewster Rd East circling under the bridge, turning west and bringing you to the shopping center and then connecting with Hwy 21.

No doubt. When I thought of yours and your cousins accident there yesterday, I had forgotten you posted here. Something has to be done at that area or this will continue. As I posted earlier. Maybe some kind of real time warning system for when traffic is stacked up. The signs could start at the Goodbee exit.
