Building a deck out back and was going to go composite, but I’m hoarding a number of suggestions to go wood + some deck paint. Obviously I’d love to go the cheaper option but I don’t want to deal with big arse splinters and wasps and shite. Is wood really a decent option?

no, unless you love sanding, painting, giant bumble bees, warping, splinters, mildew, etc.

I went with composite about 9 years ago on our camp and couldn't be happier. I just wash it once a year and it looks new. Expensive but in the long run I am almost sure it will be cheaper not even counting the labor for the upkeep of wood. Now I assume you are talking about PT SYP as wood, if you are considering IPE or something like that it is a different discussion.

I do like the look of wood with a semi-transparent stain but it is a lot of upkeep, that's what we have on our dock and boardwalk. Some of the others in our neighborhood use the thick coatings and to me, while it looks OK on a dock, it looks rather "trashy" on an actual deck attached to a home.

Just quoted a customer for some PVC decking.

5.5" x 20' was $106/board.

Composite is significantly cheaper.

If you are moving in 5 years wood is fine. If you are stayimg in this house long term, just spend the money on composite. You will curse yourself every time you have to do maintenance otherwise.

Yep about to replace my deck. 12' x 20'. Only lasted 7 years. Going with composite this time.

My 21 year old pressure treated pine deck is still in solid condition. Needs only a couple ballisters replaced and another paint job.

The treated wood today does not use the same chemicals as 21 years ago. My personal issue is my deck over the water goes underwater a couple of times a year. This caused the wood to expand and contract and crack and fail. I am installing Ipe in the spring with stainless fasteners

Go with composite or PVC foamed decking. There are decks out there 50 years old made of PVC and still look good. Initial cost is higher but you never have to paint or replace. Trust me!

I am planning an outdoor deck...most likely going with Brazilian hard wood (IPE) and stainless fasteners. Why I changed my mind from composite -- mine is a roof top deck, in direct sunlight, composite gets very hot, seems to retain heat.
