I should say this will likely be lumber 2.0. I had L5/S1 fused three years ago, did pretty well with recovery. Fast forward to last week, stepped on some uneven terrain and felt a jolt in my right lower back.

Nerve tingling developed and turned into ripping nerve pain from the outside of my hip into my groin. Spine surgery NP suspects L3-4, so does PT today.

Hoping against hope that PT can resolve things, but likely I have disc material on that nerve root, I have CT next week to determine how bad. If surgery, hoping to get away with "just" a microdiscetomy. However, prepared I might need a fusion.

Any back surgery repeters on, or have advice? This is pretty some fierce pain and worse than my last herniated disc. Gabapentin and NSAIDS just take the edge off.

When I see these threads, I always wonder what you all are doing for your backs and necks to wind up in such shape.

I was a drunken 20 year old that jumped off a cliff into a river. I did not jump out far enough, and my arse slammed the bottom. That is how I did it. So for me stupidity.

I've taken some hard hits on my back from some of the dumbest things. When I was in my late teens I tried to dive shallow into a 4 foot lake. Ended up over rotating and landed right on the crown of my head. Lucky I didn't break my neck. In my younger 30s, I was trailering a boat and the trailer wasn't quite deep enough. I was trying to muscle the reel to get the boat on the trailer. Algae beneath my feet gave way and I landed straight on my arse and sent the impact straight up my spine. That combined with several years of dirt bike racing and some get-offs have my back feeling the effects of my decisions over the years.

I was around 14 or 15 and a passenger in a bad wreck. My injuries at the time seemed minor and it wasn't until years later that I started having bad back pains. That's about the only thing I can attribute it to and continued hard labor on a regular basis.

Haven't had surgery, but likely should. Some days I can't do anything because of the pain, but I've been dealing with it the hard way to avoid any major surgeries.

My first back surgery ended with a CSF leak. The patch for the leak expanded and put me in a wheelchair until the second surgery which was then required. Any movement was excruciating pain and the PT was hell.

My cervical surgeries which have resulted in 8 screws and multiple plates in my neck have been quite uneventful.

Get as much information as possible before letting them cut your back,

I have had 11 surgeries. Nearly all of my cervical and lumbar vertebrae are fused. Good luck.

Great right now. BTW, I'm 70. Thought I was heading for number 12 last year, but neuro looked at new MRI and said the pain was from an arthritic joint. Increased my Neurontin from 600mg/day to 1800 mg/ day. No pain now to speak of.

I have degenerative disc disease exacerbated by a decade of bartending…constantly twisting, turning, bending and reaching

thus far I’ve survived with nerve ablations and rest. It sucks. When the pain comes it is completely debilitating…all you would have to do is bump in to me and I’d crumple

Lose weight. I lost a bunch after my S1-L5. I truthfully gained some back but still down 35lbs or so. It makes a huge difference. I apologize if this doesn’t apply to you, but it applied to my fat arse, lol.

Ive had 2 discetomies on the same discs as you. Last one was over 10 years ago, maybe 15 and I've been good since then. I do my back Excersises and do planks a few times week. The planks I started doing about 4 years ago and it strengthened my core biggly and I rarely have back tightness anymore even after doing things like turning over my compost bins with a shovel which puts a lot of stress on my back. I cycle and swim regularly and ran up until 5 years ago when my knee couldn't handle it anymore.
