Cortana Mall, your one stop shop for baby shite....and sneakers.

Cullens is nicer stuff, overpriced if that's what you want.
I would not spend a ton of money on stuff that sometimes you never use.
Babies R US is good because you can get everything there.
Get the necessities only, that's all you need. Don't let the wife talk you into all the accessories and stuff you don't need. It's a waste of money.
If I had to go back in time, my toy and clothes purchases would have been cut drastically knowing what I know now. I still have clothes in the closet with tags still on them.

We found the crib we wanted at Cullen's then bought it on Amazon for almost $400 cheaper. No tax and 2 day shipping with Prime.

That's about it in Baton Rouge.
You (or spouse) seem to be very picky. You should go to Zuka or the Pippen Lane store on Magazine St. in NOLA. Warning: Prepare thy wallet.

Oh Baby carries some cribs. We ended up getting crib and table from Pottery barn kids. Wife spent way too much on shite but it looks good.

Go take a look at what you like, then go find it on amazon.
Or Target online has some decent stuff.
Most of this will only be used for 2 years (if that long) then into storage for the next one... if this one doesn't kill you.

Cullen's and Babies-R-Us are the main big stores. Like others have said, test at the store, then find on Amazon, even the big items.
You can try the smaller boutiques, like Oh Baby! on Jefferson near Essen. It is pricey though. We bought our crib from there, but the floor model. No way I was paying full retail $1000 for a crib.
Also, don't turn your nose up to Once Upon a Child. You'll save a ton if you go there to find barely used carriers, car seat stroller frames, bassinets, etc. They even have new items in the box as well.
Don't limit yourselves to those baby stores for "baby furniture". You can find armoires and changing tables anywhere. You can repurpose an old dresser as a changing table, or put some curtain rods in an old cabinet for clothing. Stuff like that.

There's also a new consignment store with kid stuff on Perkins in the overpass area (can't think of the name of it but its right next to the cleaners).
We also registered at The Baby's Room in Metairie on Causeway. Really nice people and some nice stuff that's not too over the top. The clothing store in front of it had some good reasonable clothes too.
