The new head of DCFS stated that in 2008, 684 babies in LA were born addicted to drugs. That number has increased to 13,030 last year.
That is a staggering increase. Is this related to bad data collection in the past? Either way it's terrible depressing.

Yeah it seems really low. I can't imagine things have gotten that much worse in 7 years.

They arrest at least one pregnant chick a week here in N.E.AL for testing positive."Endangering their unborn child".
Yesterday it was some teenager that tested positive for Heroin.

Probably because marijuanas easier to get now because they legalized it in Colorado

What kind of drugs are they talking about?
Everyone is addicted to Heroin. I guess you could be born with the chemical imbalance that doing heroin creates but IMO thats the same as being addicted

I live in Gadsden,AL.I think every young person that goes before the Court gets put in some "Program" where they are subject to Drug Testing.
Every week there is some young girls picture in the paper that's been arrested for "Endangering their Unborn child".
The one in yesterdays paper was arrested for testing positive for Heroin.
It went on to say that when she gave birth, she tested positive for Subutex(sp).
eta: I don't think I'm addicted to Heroin either.I've never seen any.

As long as abortion is legal, she shouldn't be able to be charged with that. It's either a life or it's not.

My wife is an NICU nurse. It happens a lot and the baby still goes home with the mom.
She said its awful to watch, the baby just screams and cries, is inconsolable and there really isn't much the docs and nurses can do for the baby it just has to run its course.

My wife is a labor delivery nurse and the amount of drug addicted babies she sees is staggering. Most mothers lie pre birth about any drug use which endangers the baby during childbirth. The baby's health is often not considered at all. Dads/boyfriends shooting heroin in the bathroom of the patients room, patients smoking weed/drugs in the hospital are not as rare as you would think.

You're an idiot if you think a baby can be born addicted to marijuana.

It's an epidemic here in WNC. Some very good friends of mine foster drug addicted new borns. Last week they got a full term baby girl that weighed 5 pounds, was barely 12 inches long and was addicted to meth. The drug head mother named her Heaven.
