Last one was in 2016 in Guam which was an aborted takeoff after the normal decision to take the jet airborne. Aircraft departed the runway, the forward gear dug into the ground and then sheared off. This sent hydraulic fluid spraying onto intensely hot brakes. Fire started and aircraft eventually exploded. One previous to that was also in Guam in 2008. No conclusive decisions were reached on the cause of that one.

He was very proficient and was a Lt Colonel. But, yes he was showboating.

Hopefully this wasn't the recently re-engined one.

No, that’s not in flight test yet. But it was the one with the new AESA radar.

Yes. RR designation for those engines is BR725. AF designation is F130.

Even worse, he was already known to fly below airframe and AF regs minimum altitude (things like crossing a ridgeline with less than 50 feet of clearance) and his leadership kept looking the other way. If fact, they rewarded him by making him the chief of Stan/Eval, which meant that he was in charge of the pilot checkrides for the whole wing.

Changed the way the Air Force rotated and evaluated Wing Commanders.

I know a guy who was standing at base ops watching the whole thing.

Czar 52's airshow crash in '94 was total.

Well, in that case it was the 90 degree bank angle that did em in.

Update: Official notice and a press conference was held confirming all 8 onboard as fatalities. Next of Kin notifications are still ongoing so the list of names hasn't been publicly released yet. I knew at least 2 of the crewmembers who were both Boeing employees after retiring from the AF. Please pray for their families, their colleagues and fellow service members, and the entire B-52 test community.

RIP to the crew and condolences to their family and friends.
It has been a bad week in the aviation community.

My parents neighbor were moved out to Edwards from DC a couple of years ago. They’ve got 5 kids from 16 down to probably 4-5 years old. I think he was testing a new plane, not B-52’s, but I can’t remember for sure. God bless all of them and their families.

Done so by a barely current, showboating colonel

awful...wonder which base, only two Minot or BAFB. Sad, my wife and I both know a ton of those families through our medical practices. Sorry to hear. Lots of young families with lots of young kids.

Most are still in shock and wondering what could have gone so catastrophically wrong to cause a crash right after takeoff. For all it's brutish handling characteristics, the BUFF is a "go oriented" aircraft and usually if there's enough lift to get off the ground, there's also enough smash to "zoom" the aircraft to pull up to give everyone a chance to get out (even manual bailouts for those not in ejection seats). Not second guessing the crew, just curiosity and shock.

Not to be rude, but it's in the thread title: Edwards AFB. It's where B-52 Developmental Test occurs. This particular jet was on loan to Edwards from Barksdale in order to test the new AESA radar that's part of the major B-52 modernization effort that culminates with the new engines turning them into B-52Js instead of B-52Hs of today.
