Even if he saw the other plane, he was probably pulling hard as he could into the turn and thinking he was going to evade up until he realized it was too late. It happened so fast he wouldn't have had much more of a chance than to start the bank and then realize "oh shite" and it was too late.

He's clearly over 45° which means all he can see is the ground to his left and sky everywhere else. He might have never even seen the bomber.
It’s possible.

How could the smaller plane not see the bomber? Horrible.
Looks like the 63 was banking and at that angle there’s no way to see anything underneath and there are no fancy electronics to warn of a collision like modern aircraft.
One of the pilots probably errored on what altitude they should be at as that maneuver is pretty common at air shows with the bomber flying a steady with the smaller fighters banking above.

Certainly didn’t look like a hard turn. Nor any evasive maneuvers.

Yeah. I'd think that plane could turn tighter than that if need be. Could certainly gain altitude. Just sawed the B17 in two.

Now at 15,000 feet, I would think differently.
Certainly gives our generation a real life perspective of the sacrifices a heck of a lot of young men made over Europe in 1944.

There are barely a half-dozen or so B-17s still flying of less than 50 complete aircraft still in existence. I saw one flying in St. Louis about 10 years ago.

His name was Charred Broiled.

You have no way of knowing if it was his fault or not.
Might have been but you certainly haven’t the slightest clue.
