If you truly believe that guy did this on purpose, you are a fricking moron.
It looks to me like the guy in the aerobatics plane wanted to buzz the B-17 (it is an air show, after all) but missed his mark by just that much.

Terrible deal there. That's exactly how a lot of bomber crews over Europe met their maker.

B17s could take a lot of damage. This was hit by the wing of a ME-109 and flew back home.
A direct hit from another plane, that saws it in half, is a bit too much however.

That is a lot more visibility than I would have thought.
He was banking left. Try looking through the right floorboard and tell me about that visibility.

BS. Most small aircraft ‘pilots’ are nothing more than average Joe’s looking for a thrill.
I wish FAA would get a strangle hold on pilot licenses. Flying an airplane isn’t the same as burning it up on a jet ski.
It appears the smaller plane pilot thought he could floor it and make the turn before hitting the bomber. Bad pilot.
This is among the dumbest posts I’ve ever seen written on this website.

I have a PPL and it was 1000 times harder to get than a DL It also cost about $6k

Same here. There is absolutely nothing in common between a pilot's license and riding a jetski.

I think there are a lot of single engine pilots who have no business flying, for the record.
A guy flying a WWII fighter plane in the Commemorative Air Force isn’t one of them. Even hinting at such a notion is lunacy, as if the pilot of the “small airplane” just decided to go casually hop in a P-63 one morning and go joy riding.

What a terrible tragedy. I have met those guys and girls of that crew. Sad for the families. They were good people. They would have a few beers after flights.
Not to mention another lose of one of the a B17.
I am in the boonies. When I get back home I will post a picture of the plane, me and motorcycle.
I am interested in what the FAA and commemorative Air Force has to say about it.
Very Sad all the way around.

The planes were doing a parade lap down the runway. The P-63 was going too fast to stay in the proper position in the parade with the other fighters. The fighters went first, and then the B-17 led the parade of bombers The P-63 pilot was focused on the closest P-51, judging the speed and distance to get back in the proper position. The long nose and cockpit position of the Kingcobra blocked him from seeing the B-17 while banked in the turn. The P-39 and P-63 are both some of the worst WWII era fighters as far as visibility. Nobody on either plane knew there was a problem until it was far too late.
You see a lot of uneducated, outright stupid takes on the internet, and TD has never failed to disappoint in that regard.

that's lay people in general

that would include more lay people but what I find amusing is the clueless(about aviation,) TD poster passing off his opinion as fact and even includes a critique of something he knows zero about

The beauty of the OT is that once you sift through the BS posts, they usually have a few subject matter experts providing great input, much like yourself when it comes to any aircraft discussion.

He was in his bank, belly toward the B17 coming in from his 5 oclock. By the time they saw each other, it was way too late

Magnificent airplanes. Flying Fortress. I loved the sound of the B-17 engines as the airplane flew over. Then that terrible sound of the P-63 Cobra crashing into the B-17. Awful tragedy.
My prayers for the victims and their families. The old warbirds and their pilots will be missed.
The loss of these pilots reminds me of President Reagan's speech following the Challenger disaster.....
"We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for the journey and waved goodbye and “slipped the surly bonds of earth” to “touch the face of God.” - President Reagan - January 28, 1986.

I just saw the video from another angle.. Multiple aircraft making a left turn back over the runway. The B26 seems to have thought that he could make a tighter turn and maybe ot just couldn't do it.
I met the pilot and Crew before.
Will be black to get back home.
