Anything that even approaches hazing should be heavily supervised by adults (i.e. not upperclassmen - former members in their late 20s, early 30s who can come in and say "No" to shite - and that be their only function).
Alumni advisers can't be there more than an hour or two a week. They can't really supervise hazing without opening up themselves to lawsuits where they can end up losing their homes and savings.
It comes down to the officers in the active chapters. You have to have people strong enough to rally people to get rid of the assholes who want to push everything too far. When you have 50 members you're going to have a few people who lack common sense. It sucks to boot someone, but you have to protect the safety of your pledges and actives.

The Tri Delt president my senior year was the daughter of a truck driver. She was also a smokeshow with a 4.0 in petroleum engineering.
Aren't you an early 80s graduate? Was she able to get a job in her major or did she become a pharmaceutical rep?
Yeah, Im still friends with her. She worked for a variety of outfits, including Enron, and always came out ahead. She now has her own oilfield service company that supplies a niche product. She's super smart and focused, but her being a hot female has undoubtedly played a part in her success.

Insane to suspend the sororities. Any "hazing" they participate in is a fricking joke.

Sweet! Good for her.
I was still in school and working on weekends, holidays and summers for an oil field service company as a sample catcher on drilling rigs and gofer/flunky/general labor around the district warehouse. It was bottom of the totem pole work, but the pay was relatively good and the district manager got me work almost whenever I asked. I was thrilled to have the job.
One weekend, in 1984 or '85 when things were going to shite in the oil patch, I had to repaint the exterior of a mobile unit that was used on offshore rigs. Basically a shipping container. I'm on the top with a new guy, rolling paint like they asked me to. The new guy just can't stop bitching about anything and everything. I finally told him to shut the frick up and paint or shite the frick up and don't paint, but he had to shut the frick up because I was tired of hearing him whine. I also gave him a brief lecture on how lucky we were to have jobs when people were getting laid off everywhere. It turned out that the dude had a PetE degree from Alabama. He was quite bitter about the situation. I actually admitted that as happy as I was to be working, I'd be pissed too if that was the only kind of work I could get after graduating with a petroleum engineering degree.
Had a friend graduate from Tulane in Geology in '82 (I think. Might have been '83.) The job market was soft, so he went back for his masters. Two years later it was even worse. He's never worked as a geologist.
On topic note: There was hazing and heavy drinking in my fraternity. But even in the early '80s we were smart enough not to make a pledge drink a fifth of Everclear.

No way we would've wasted liquor on a pledge.

Yeah when it crashed it was overnight. I remember Angelle Parlange was a Kappa at that time. She was one of the insanely rich Parlanges from Point Coupee, and majored in petroleum land management with an eye to taking over management of her family's holdings. After oil cratered she went to NY and became a pretty successful fashion designer so I guess it worked out for her.

The big crash happened, but the company kept me on for a long while after it. Maybe because I wasn't full time, maybe because they liked me. I'm not sure. Finally, I called one time to see if they needed help that weekend and the District Mgr was kind of hesitant and waffling, so I asked if I'd done something wrong. He launched into this long explanation about how he knew I needed the money for school and what a great employee I was, but the economy wasn't improving and how hard things were. I asked him, "Are you laying me off?" He starts telling me how sorry he is and sounded genuinely upset. I couldn't believe he was actually worried about how I was going to feel. I cut him off and said, "I can't believe I didn't get the boot 6 months ago! Thanks for keeping me on as long as you did. I appreciate everything you've done for me. Please don't feel bad about this."
This poor guy was having to layoff guys with families, mortgages and truck notes. I was small potatoes. He might have lost his job for all I know. His district office did close and never re-opened at that location.

The weed is a prep, it suppresses vomiting. It lets the individual drink more alcohol. The person can obtain blood alcohols in the stratosphere.

In the mid 90s a frat boy died after drinking way too much at Murphy's was it? You know the bar in the old shopping center north of campus where the old grocery store was and Chelsea's and the record store. Not much happened after that.

we might know each other. you would definitely know my brother. not going to say names on here, but I was very proud with what y'all did over the last decade.
Thank you for the sentiment. It's sad that all of that hard work went by the wayside. Maybe one day they'll be back, but I'm not banking on it and not with this crop of guys.
I can only imagine who you could be. A couple of people come to mind. So, yeah, we probably know each other.

Is this the legit strategy behind this? Cause the couple times I attempted to drink/smoke or vise-versa I just ended up asleep about 30 minutes in, but it wasn't in an attempt to prevent vomiting or anything.

A very poor strategy, but it's a strategy especially if somebody thinks they need to hold a lot of alcohol in a competitive situation.

That was my during my frosh year. Holy hell that changed the face of the school. What do you mean not much happened. LSU very much was a party school before that after they kicked a frat off campus and closed a bar and was even a major story in the NY times. They also pretty much castrated the Greek system after that.

I'd bull doze all those m-f'ing houses. All of em.

So, he had weed in his system too?

Just got word from someone on campus that apparently the Phi Delt pledge trainer committed suicide last night.
eta: Luckily it sounds like fake news. Friend of a friend works A/V at a local news station and said they had someone contact them with the story but after looking into said its false. Apologies for causing a stir.
