Hate to engage in class warfareisms, but this analysis by brilliant author JD Vance seems largely accurate. Six figure professionals working at international firms brought this virus to America, and now are overwhelmingly supporting economic shutdowns that don’t AT ALL affect their wallets or their health. It’s the poor and middle class that are facing both the disease and the govt-induced poverty.

@JDVance1
Looking at the COVID map and the demographics of death, one random hypothesis I have is that the professional class in high GDP, high inequality regions brings the disease in, and then withdraws from social life in a way that ensures the working class gets slammed.

Also, that withdrawal can beneficially stop the spread over time. I'm not making a crude populist claim here. Just stating the obvious: that once the seeds are planted, some groups of people are better positioned to steer clear of the fallout.

I feel like this topic is just aiming to create misguided anger.

I don't see anything particularly brilliant about his observations.

The OT hates elites but also hates poors. This will be very confusing to them.

Affluent Chinese running away from their country's mass infection brought it here

Not even close.

one random hypothesis

Is just that. Some random, unsubstantiated brainfart that falls apart when examining actual epidemiological data. The hotspots generally started in major urban areas where travel from China and affected regions concentrated in ethnic populations that were also from those same regions.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

If you're just now catching on to the disproportional standard of living between the wealthy and the poor (in any country, mind you), I guess I only have to say "welcome to the conversation".

Nothing ground breaking in his theory! News Flash!! Read the Bible, Read a History Book! In times of plague the less affluent have always been effected the worse.

The “poor” in this country live pretty high on the hog.

This is something I have to constantly remind myself. Compared to some people in this country, I live in filth. Compared to most people in any developing or non-developed country, I'm a fricking king.

That's not to dismiss the idea that some people ascend to their level of wealthy by illegitimate means, but it's healthy to remind yourself every now and then that if you live in the U.S., things could be much worse.

Vance's wife clerked for the ultimate faux conservative judge, Chief Justice John Roberts.

I'm going out on a limb here and state this author is in favor of "globalization", "no borders", and against the "build that wall" chant

He's right, unless he's also implying intention.Rich people are more likely to travel and poor people are more likely to be unhealthy.
But the observation stops there, not sure what he wants as a result.
