Also look up a restaurant called Bacon. Go there for brunch (I think they open at 11). I keep going back there because I want to try everything on their menu. Get a bacon waffle to split with Mrs. Alum. The breakfast tacos are great too.
Damn it man. Only 2 days. Only 6 meals.

I never watched them make it so I'm not sure, so don't hold me to it!
They used to use the big ice ball too, but I'm not sure if they do that any more.

What is so bad about downtown? I mean, if it's not your thing, that's cool, but you are in the minority when it comes to what people think of Austin's downtown.
Yes, there are worse places. I'm just bitter because it's nothing compared to what downtown Austin used to be. It's overcrowded and insanely trendy now. 10 years ago it had a much more unique vibe to it. Some of those places still exist, but are becoming harder to find.

I'll make it 5. I will add Banger's for food and giant beer selection and my favorite is Whip In. Its on the service road of South I-35 and used to be a Whip In convenience store. It has morphed into a craft beer/wine bar with great Indian food and always decent singer/songwriter live music. If you have time, Jester King brewery is a great spot about 20 minutes south of Austin. Its a Texas Hill Country Ranch with a brewery/ tap house, Pizza Joint with picnic tables all over the grounds.

I was here 10 years ago. Yes it is more crowded, and yes, some cool places have closed. There are lots of new places, although some may be considered "trendy", I find some to be interesting. What specifically was so much better 10 years ago, besides less people?
Zappas always mentions Whip-in, and for good reason. That place is awesome!

Don't bother driving out to The Salt Lick in Driftwood. It's a tourist trap. You wait for hours outside, cash only, BYOB, and when you get in you get boring barbecue and sliced white sandwich bread from the nearest chain supermarket.

It wasn't great even 10 years ago. You have to go back 20 years or more. But Austin is being Dallasized at a rapid rate.

I was there. I was 22 though. Remember they had a Fat Tuesday.

It's tough to put into words, but it's the overall vibe. It doesn't have that eclectic feel Austin used to have about it and feels like every other downtown area now. The live music isn't what it used to be. You can still find bands playing, but you really have to hunt for a good band now. I used to feel like I could walk into any place and find a good band.
Jazz on 6th was my spot back in the day. There were some amazing musicians coming through there. Pinetop Perkins was always hanging out there, ran into Buddy Miles there numerous times. I know I'm out of the current loop as to what's going on downtown, but it's been years since I've seen or heard of some killer little dive bar with legendary musicians hanging out there regularly.
Edit.....Just realized it wasn't Jazz on 6th. I forget what the name of the place was. It was a little blues bar.
Jazz on 6th was a restaurant.

Go to Lamberts for the Austin BBQ experience. No need to waste your time in Austin sitting in line at Franklins.
Easy Tiger was my hangout when I was in grad school at UT. Really cool place. Check out the patio

We went to Austin for about a week and ate at Whip-In for dinner twice in three days. Great unique dishes, reasonable prices, super beer and wine selection. One warning: the second time we were there, they were setting up to have a poetry slam that evening. That caused me to flee like the place was being fumigated.

I guess...I still feel like E 6th and Rainey are pretty unique to Austin. 6th St is 6th St.

Yeah, if you are just talking about bar hopping and seeing a random local band, then yeah, I get where you are coming from. Austin still has some promising acts of its own, and it gets tons of well known artists coming through town on the regular. There are also a ton of music fests now, which I'm guessing you don't like, but it's good for people who like those sorts of things.

Meh, times change, the eclectic austin is south of the river, east of 35, and north of campus now. I remember as a kid downtown being the most boring place in the world with nothing open during the day, at least now you can do something when the sun is out.
