I can't remember the name, but last year we ate at a place. It used to be a gas/service station. Now is a coffee bar and craft beer place with mexican food with Vegan options. It was pretty cool. And in an area that looked like it should be sketchy. But was just new LARGE homes on old small lots. Every old home that looked like it could be a crack house had a fence thrown up around it and was ready for demo.

It's also (well, the bar is) THE headquarters of the suburban Austin swingers scene... if that's your thing.

Interesting. Not a swinger, but would be funny to people watch.

IMO nothing ruins a good time like a couple of dicks.

Not my scene, or area of town, but it's pretty legendary.

I've recently heard this. Not my scene either. When I've been at Steiner Ranch, I've never seen anything like that going on. I'm out there quite often too and I do a crawfish boil out there every year.
At the bar, it's generally middle aged professionals. Last time I was there, I was talking to a retired Dr. Really nice guy, maybe he was trying to bang my wife lol.

I'm just that guy that will appreciate that I am drinking a cocktail in a room that was someones living room 75 years before.

Haha, no, those houses were being lived in less than 8 years ago. Yes true, people were living in them 75 years ago, but as recent as 8 years ago.

I'll try to keep things within your area or a small Uber/Lyft ride away

What cuisines do you like?

Do you like dancing? Donn's Depot on 5th is great spot for dancing.

Blues? Antone's on 5th between Russia House and Eddie V's. It just reopened after a bit of a hiatus.

Cocktails? Small Victory, Firehouse Lounge, Midnight Cowboy (make reservation now) The Roosevelt Room, CU29.

BBQ without a line? Micklewaith BBQ, or Terry Black's. Beware: Coopers from Llano just opened an outpost on Congress downtown, and it is not good, nor is it worth the money.

Vaudevillian Comedy show? Esther's Follies

Late night food? Easy Tiger. Get one of the meat boards, very delicious. Thai Kun at Steampunk saloon (get the Beef Panang or Khao Man Gai or the Fried Chicken. If you want a late night nice restaurant there's Justine's Brasserie.

Walk around South Congress, Rainey St, Downtown, the boardwalk and trail around Town Lake (now called Lady Bird Lake), grab a paddle boat or something fun maybe.

Any particular type of stuff you want to do, brunch, tex-mex, fancy restaurants, music or something?

Franklin's is absolutely worth the wait. Go early, bring a chair (if possible) and a beer and relax. The brisket is the best I've ever had.

I've lived in Austin for 23 years and never been to Franklins. Might be time to try it out

If you are looking for a large beer selection check out craft pride and bangers.

Bangers is pretty cool, it has about 100 beers on tap and a beer garden outside.

Sounds perfect. Is that in downtown area? I will of course google map it.

What is so bad about downtown? I mean, if it's not your thing, that's cool, but you are in the minority when it comes to what people think of Austin's downtown.

To the OP

Check out Rainey St, East 6th (east of I 35), Easy Tiger Bar, Elephant Room, Lamberts. Don't spend much time on 6th St, unless you want to deal with a bunch of underage kids loitering in the street and go to some touristy bars.

Red River, north of 6th, also has lots of cool places.

Depends on how you feel about hanging out with the hipster type crowd. My wife and I enjoyed Rainey St and we are in our mid 30's. Just stay away on the weekend and you will be fine. Lots of people once the weekend starts.

You're about the 3rd to mention Easy Tiger. Guess I need to check it out.

I believe the one bashing downtown is an Austin local? NOLA people all hate The Quarter, and Vegas people hate The Strip.

I appreciate all input, but am really only looking for things that are a walk or short shuttle or Uber to get to.

Go to Peche and get their Old Fashioned. It's very good...one of the best I've had. It's pricey, but worth it. You can also hit up Cedar Street Courtyard next door. They usually have a decent band playing, but will have a cover.

Go to Elephant Room, like I said. Underground jazz bar.

I'm a local! Some people just don't like certain things. Downtown is awesome, trust me. There are things for all types of people.

It's Austin and I am looking for a couple cocktail bars, so I expect to stumble across some hipsters. I can bore a hipster to tears talking about beards and DE Razor shaving if challenged.

Thanks. saw it on Google street view and it looked promising. I will check it out.

Cool. If they muddle the cherry or put an orange wedge in there and muddle the whole damned thing, I'm holding you responsible... If I have to ASK for a cherry I will know they know whats up.

If you are looking for a super hipster cocktail bar, go to Midnight Cowboy. You are supposed to make a reservation and the door has no sign, but has a fake a list of people who "live there", and you are supposed to push one of the buttons to get someone to let you in. They have a drink cart and make the drinks in front of you, and have some pretty unique stuff. It's also pricey, and a little over-hyped IMO. I've been a couple times, and the last time the waiter was a bit of a douche and the service wasn't that great...

Easy Tiger and Craft Pride are awesome. The deep dish pizza in the back of Craft Pride is amazing.

Also look up a restaurant called Bacon. Go there for brunch (I think they open at 11). I keep going back there because I want to try everything on their menu. Get a bacon waffle to split with Mrs. Alum. The breakfast tacos are great too.

Sounds too much like the movie Swingers. I will get mouthy and start quoting the movie too much. If my quotes are lost on the waiter I will berate him. I see it going downhill quick.
