Have to disagree. I've eaten a lot of BBQ in my time and Franklin's is a cut above the rest. If you hate the wait though, I can understand avoiding it.

Screw the downtown area, it sucks. Get out by the lake.

Nah. The lake is too hard. It's hit and miss. And if you miss you are 30-45 mins from the next attempt.

I just want to wander around and stay in a nice hotel.

Rainey Street was fun. Kinda got crowded in the weekend, but it was def better than 6th street to me. Also check out South Congress. Food trucks everywhere. Ms P's electric cock was some of the best fried chicken I've ever eaten and Burro grilled cheese is a pretty good grilled cheese with a twist.

what is the Rainey Street crowd like? Will I be an old man staggering around with 25 year olds?"

Because Rainey St. sounds right up my alley. With the setup and the history. I'm just that guy that will appreciate that I am drinking a cocktail in a room that was someones living room 75 years before.

any restaurant recs in that area? specifically along Cesar Chevaz

Jacoby's on Cesar Chavez.

Dai Due or Salty Sow on Manor, which is further north, but still on the E side.

Those are all serious restaurants.

Sawyer & Co on Cesar Chavez for lighter fare, or if you want lunch.

I used to eat at Barley Swine when it was on Lamar and had a fixed menu. Haven't been to their new location. When it was on Lamar with a fixed menu, it was the JAM!

Odd Duck is really good. Great location, sweet build-out/ambiance and some of the best cocktails in town.

Coopers and Louie Mueller's is better, but both are a nice haul outside of town. Franklin's only has the hype because it's the best thing in the most trendy area of town. It's been blown up by people who won't go outside of that area and have nothing to compare it to, so they label it as the best in the world.

That'll be the case anywhere in Austin. Just roll with it.

yeah I went to Barley Swine twice when it was in the old location, but I've heard it is now more expensive and not as good FWIW

so I don't know

It was probably one of my favorite meals ever though, so it would be a shame if it changed

I haven't been to Louie Muller's but I've hit most of the major BBQ places. I will have to see when I can go there. Just hit Black's in Lockhart this weekend.

Franklin's is absolutely worth the wait.

The only reason to eat at Franklin's is to say you did.

I've heard both of these points. I'm only there two days. Dont want to spend a few hours waiting for BBQ

I don't think it's a distinct cut above Luling City Market, Black's, Cooper's, or Louie Mueller's. It maybe slightly better than some of those, maybe not as good as some of those, but not distinctly much better. Franklin's is a hype-machine. It's the Disney of BBQ.

I also had a good time at the Broken Spoke. It's a honky tonk that I doubt many on here would recommend but it was funny to me to people watch as people were "boot scootin" as I drank draft beer from a red solo cup.

I figured.

That's a bummer.

Agree that it was one of my favorite meals ever.

I'm a fan of Salt Lick. I find it to be pretty damn good food plus I enjoyed the drive out there.
