When I had my first apartment, I lived across the street from an elderly couple. Got to talkig to the old man one afternoon and found out he had been at Buchanwald(sp?). Showed me the number tatoo on his forearm. He was a carpenter who made caskets for the German Officers. Never really went into any more detail. You could tell it was something he did not want to talk much about. Kind of like my uncle who was at Iwo Jima. Never talked about it, but he must have seen some things that he never got over.

A interesting read is the autobiography of Rudolf Hoess, the long term commandant of Auschwitz, who was asked by Polish authorities to write his memoir while in prison, before he was hanged on the grounds of Auschwitz I camp in 1947

Had a guy who went to the same Synagogue as me that was on the Auschwitz death march. I used to ask him questions for hours and he would smile and answer them. One time I saw him at a housewarming party and introduced him to my wife. There was a DJ playing and he was literally telling us stories while he was dancing. Lost his mother, father, and both his sisters in the gas chambers.
He clearly never had a bad day after the Holocaust. I'd imagine after going through that you either shut down, or nothing will ever bother you again after that because everything else seems like a gift. He was definitely in the latter. He came to America to be a hair dresser and started a family.

I’ve been around this board for a long time and I have to say this is new territory for me. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone just be all like, “meh, that Holocaust was just propaganda to start making money off of petro and to create the UN.”
That’s an awfully weird hill to die on considering the gravity of what went on where one guy was heading a movement to literally make one type of human being extinct.

My great uncle's girlfriend is 87 and she has the tattoo on her arm from her time in Treblinka. What she experienced as a young child is horrifying. The Russians came in and saved her and her older sister but the rest of her family was killed. The Russians advanced which allowed them to be freed. She and her sister ran and hid in a Catholic Church outside of Prostyn but the Germans started burning down the entire town. They ran and hid in a stream for three days until the Russians found them and brought them to safety.
She has balls the size of a Navy Seal because when she recounts her experience every hair on your body stands up. She is an awesome lady who has given millions of dollars to charity to help children whose parents left them orphaned because she says it helps her heal from the ordeal she went through.
