Drugs are illegal for that very same reason. Regan's war on drugs locked up all the black fathers. It was nothing more than population control. In reality it did so much to further decay all of society.

Good lord. They were just trying to scrap out a life for their families, right? All the black fathers were taking care of their kids before Reagan's evil war!

The problem with that concept is that you can significantly increase the chance of harming others when using (certain) drugs.

Drug addicts don't care about the external costs. They just care about getting another fix.

Yeah, like when somebody coked out of their skull gets behind the wheel and wipes out another car full of innocent people.

No thanks.

That would be LBJ's "Great Society" and the welfare state it propagated.

You significantly increase the chance of harming others every time you get behind the wheel of a car.

In a truly free country, the government shouldn't control what you out in your own body

if you're not harming others, you should generally be able to do whatever you want imo. The idea that gambling and prostitution are illegal but drink all you want is silly to me.

Plus, I doubt there's anyone out there just waiting for heroin to become legal so they can start doing it so I wonder how much drug use for hard drugs would actually rise if it became legal.

definitely true. I also think punishment for harming others in general should be much harsher than they are now.

Legalize all the stuff that causes no harm to others, punish the stuff that does much more harshly. I'd vote for that President lol

I would much rather a person full of cocaine behind the wheel than a drunk. Again this is an obvious statement from someone who has no idea the effects of the drugs he is demonizing.
Ever taken a five hour energy? Or Amphetamine salts (ritalin, adderol)? Take that, multiply it by ten and that's cocaine.

Exactly. I could fly a plane and pass the bar exam on coke while having zero experience in either.

I'm not old enough to have seen how things were before the war on drugs, but everyone I've spoken to has told me that things were better before. Blacks were more respectable and less dependent on government before. Drug use and distribution did not have the same element of danger until the stakes were raised by the lengthy sentences.

I think drugs are bad for society but I'm for freedom, so I think adults should be able to buy drugs if they want to.
This^

Freedom is where it is at. Also you can have public intoxication fines/arrest like you do with alcohol, but with drugs (perhaps outside of weed, as it really harmless than most things in life) make the punishment more severe and exponentially more so for using in public ( like shooting up at the park). This is just common sense really.

Same with crimes committed while under the influence. Weed testing would need to change for this to work for it as it stays in the system for up to months after stopping use, but then again most weed users don't steal or rob for their fix.

Also we can educate the kids and have society look down on those who use just like we already do on prostitutes, black market dealers of electronics, groceries, etc. Have clinics and rehab centers set up with free admission. This would free up the prisons also and would keep the real criminals in there instead of those who may use a drug (no violent crime).

Instead of spending so much money on the war on drugs, we can turn that around to cleaning up the streets. Gangs won't get the easy constant supply of money from selling these drugs, as they won't be able to compete with legal businesses.

I think people should be free to do what they want within reason of not harming or infringing on another person's rights. We shouldn't waste millions of dollars on jailing these individuals and ruining their lives with felonies all for non violent crimes of drug use.
