re: Attended Catholic Church for the first time in a while and it wasn't the same

I can’t make excuses for the church, but I find it ironic that people on here laud young students sleeping with teachers but outright condemn what’s happening in the church. Even more ignorant that some act as if this situation is only happening within the Catholic Church.
I think it’s terrible, and I too question the use of my donations, but I don’t plan to leave Catholicism because of the decades old actions of a group of priests.

Really? Which religion does the Bible say is necessary?
John 3:16
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
I've searched cover to cover, and I can't find a thing in the Bible about Baptists, Presbyterians, Church of Christ, Assembly of God, Catholics, Lutherans, Pentecostals, or any other religion you can name. Religion is completely unnecessary for a deep and abiding faith in God.
The last thing I would want to be is a stumbling block for someone else, but there is simply no basis for a religion of any kind, that I can find. Can you show me?

It’s an understandable concern but it is possible to follow the church’s teachings while also detesting the handling of sexual abuse cases. I am not Catholic because of any priest, I am because of everything stated in the Nicene Creed.

Catholic is more of a designation than a specific religion. The religion is Christianity, and the church is Catholic, i.e. “universal.” There are over 30,000 denominations that have broken off from Catholicism since the Reformation.

I guess I'd word that quite differently. I'd say the shared faith is Christianity, belief in God, and His son Jesus as Savior.
Religions are a construct of man, and therefore corrupt, for the most part. That would be where your Baptists, Catholics, Lutherans, Presbyterians what have you come in.

Catholicism should have never broken off from the true church (i.e., the Orthodox Church).

I’m not going down that rabbit hole

For all the talk about "the Church" and the bureaucracy of it all (which is big, no doubt), I think it always seems to help to remember that each parish, and each pastor, really is it's own little world.
There are some great, welcoming parishes with great pastors. There are some terrible, snobby parishes with terrible pastors. It's all about finding a fit.
The parish I currently attend, is somewhat smaller than average, but is very open, welcoming, and has a great young pastor. He's in his mid 30s, very traditionalist, and gives a homily that is easy to listen to and easy to relate to. He also isn't afraid to step away from the company line when need be, which has been refreshing to see.
All the sex scandals are terrible and huge news, but they really have nothing to do with the day to day of the church parish.

If you give money to the Catholic Church, you support pedophilia. There’s no way around it.

The Orthodox Church shouldn’t be that different

Not to change the subject or anything, but I’ve never understood people switching between different Christian denominations. They’re all pretty much the same thing.
I am Catholic (more or less), was raised Catholic, and consider myself Catholic (more or less).
In my life I’ve waffled between somewhat regular Mass attendance, to occasional, to long periods of no attendance. I go when I feel like I need to go. And I’m OK with that. The one thing I would never do would be wasting my time switching to another denomination. We all worship the same God. I can see going the atheist or agnostic route, but switching seems like a waste of time.

Down vote if it makes you feel better, but as far as I know, every religion can be traced back to a man.
Christianity traces back to God. Big difference.

Christians believe in the trinity, so I believe Jesus is God. Fully man, and fully divine.

Right. Jesus was a man, but not really a man. He was a man without sin, without vice, without fault.
Not so for John The Baptist, or Paul, or Luther, or anyone else you can name. They created their own religion. Each religion being a construct of a man, a sinner, a prideful, boastful, lustful, sometimes wicked, sometimes evil, man. Most certainly not a man in the sense that Jesus was a man.
