Same. The number of really good metro schools is diminishing, and some of the in town schools are improving. We're in a top elementary school, but would have to go private after. That's the plan for now, but we'll see.

Late to the party, and sure I'll get to this, but a teacher in grade school was the first to teach me it stood for:

You can still get to SweetWater. This was a quarter of a mile away, not the underpass to get to the brewery.

True but distribution is going to be a bitch.

I use the downtown connector to and from work and sometimes during lunch. It usually takes me 55min-1hr to get to work. This morning took 3 hours. Can't imagine tonight's drive home.

And this may not be fixed till November

Can more of our ATL friends chime in with the horror stories of day 1 without I-85?

I grew up being used to the Atlanta traffic, born and raised in Marietta. Having been gone for a decade, though, I have no tolerance for it anymore. I live downtown in Columbia, 15 minute commute on a bad day, and it's great. The only reason I'd ever want to leave a downtown area now is if I could have a LOT of acreage in the country. Otherwise, sitting on a half acre lot in the suburbs with an hour+ commute to and from work everyday just seems like hell.

I grew up ITP. Got married and moved OTP.

Living in town would be great, because you have more than just the cookie cutter chains of places to eat and shop.

We wanted to build on the property I grew up on (been in the family close to 80 years) but it was just not doable. To build a 2600 square foot home without many luxury add ons was going to be over $500k, and property taxes could have easily been $10k/year. We were able to build in north Gwinnett for less than that and about 1.5 times the square footage with a lot of amenities - hardwoods throughout, quartz countertops everywhere, etc.

Also, in town has become a little too left leaning for this conservative white boy. I think we would have put up with it to be able to keep another generation or two on that property, but we realized we probably wouldn't be friends with any of our kids' friends' parents due to political ideology.

that may be a bit of a stretch. Any time I have to fly I always take marta. Coming from the brookhaven station it's 20 minutes and I'm dropped off literally in the airport. Aint no way I could make that same time driving or ubering or otherwise.

With the extension of the 85 HOT express lane another 10-12 miles from Old Peachtree up to Hamilton Mill, I am wondering if some of that was the conduit for all of the wiring for the toll system. I know I see a ton of orange and blue conduit sticking up along the right hand side of 85 north in the construction zone.

Using Google Maps, you can see these bundles of conduit under there since at least 2012, with it possible being as far back as 2007/2008 (blurry photos are blurry).

Maybe it's what that stuff was for, but stuff has been there for 5 years or so.

Yeah speed isn't phenomenal, but the problem is and will continue to be that MARTA doesn't go anywhere.

Until there are stops where people live, work and play, it'll continue to be a subsidized and wasteful mass transit system for the poor and largely a park and ride service to the airport for everyone else.

I don't think there's any place out here in Cobb County that sells it.

I was thinking more in relation to other large cities transit systems. Chicago, NY, DC and such.

I would say 20 minutes is a bit of a stretch, more like 40, but it is nice for flights. Unless you get a crazy person who threatens to shoot up the train...

i am not reading 10 pages worth, but someone has already made a joke based on the title of the story and the Falcons allowing a 25 point comeback in the SuperBowl?

Something like, "Atlanta is used to witnessing collapses"

I-85 collapse: Major north-south artery closed as spring break travel kicks off
quote:

The shutdown likely sets the city up for traffic headaches for months to come after creating navigation hell on Thursday with jams that extended five miles or more and stranded motorists in the immediate area for hours.

220,000+: Estimated number of cars that drive through the stretch of I-85 per day

The closure comes at a sensitive time for a city accustomed to gridlock -- with hordes of spring break vacationers poised to drive though the regional hub

Three sections of northbound I-85 -- including the section that collapsed -- and three sections of southbound I-85 will have to be replaced, McMurry said. That's 350 feet of highway -- nearly a football field -- in each direction

Measuring the traffic impact with that section of I-85 closed: There has been a 50% increase on the Interstate 285 ring around Atlanta, and a 25% increase in traffic on major city streets near the closed area
