It was never about safety. If that was the case, most non driving cities (NYC, DC, Boston, etc) wouldn't have been included. Which is also the reason the law won't change after driverless cars are introduced. Who is going to support those budgets now?

It was all about the $$$ that zero tolerance liquor laws brought across the country against a class of people (18-20) that can't typically defend themselves against. Think about how many people ATC employs, or ABC at LSU tailgating. Those salaries aren't cheap- all in the name of "safety".

You boys down in Louisiana need to join in the revolution. It is the corrupt federal government that is keeping the states from enacting their own drinking age by wrongfully threatening to withhold federal highway funds if we don't comply.

Every year in South Dakota a politician from out in West River (that's the western, more cowboy part of the state) introduces legislation to lower the drinking age to back to 18. Every year it gets closer to passing.

Louisiana and South Dakota were the last two states to bow to the feds when this National Drinking Age was rammed down our throats, let us be the first two to say frick you to the Feds and put the drinking age back where we want it...

...and I'm a 40 something year old man that has this opinion.

I wonder if the feds really would withhold highway funds if a state said "We think the drinking age should be 18". I mean, Colorado and Washington legalized pot by a wide margin and the feds shrugged and moved on. Seems to me that's something libertarian leaning Republicans and socially liberal Democrats could agree on.....

Doubt it would fly, too many graphic car crash photos where teenagers died due to drunk driving. There's a logical argument to be had that the higher drinking age is partially what leads to the binge drinking (that ultimately leads to the dead teenagers), but there are a lot of enraged mothers out there that don't want to here it.

You may be right.
Reagan was president when they started the push toward raising the drinking age and using federal highway funds as the cudgel. Even though he was a conservative, states rights guy, I remember one of his aides saying the MADD types got to him with horror stories about what happened to their kids.

Why is Great Wall on that list?
