Not much difference at all but I pay $100 total right now. What the hell is the "smartphone access charge"?

Again, not even certain they're losing money, but you're acting like AT&T is the first company every to charge a lower price and you're completely baffled by the idea of it.

It's very odd.

A churched up term for the "per user" charge.

I dont get how people tear their phones up so quickly.

I only recently replaced my 3GS iPhone that was purchased in 2009 and that was only b/c I didn't feel like opening it up to replace the failing battery.

Some people are prone to breaking shite. I've never cracked my screen and I work in a plant. I know some people who can look at a screen and it cracks.

That can vary from store to store. When I last upgraded my phone, they told me that, but I went to Best Buy and got the phone cheaper just for renewing my 2-year contract.

If I sign a new 2 year contract when the new iPhone comes out I'll lose my $15 discount for not being on the Next Plan but the phone would still end up being cheaper.

$15 x 24 months + $199 up front = $559

Retail price, and what Next would be based on, is $649.99.

As long as they'll let me I'll continue to sign 2 year contracts and use the money from my old phone to pay the initial $199.

Well, I pay for my wife, mom and sisters iphones. It was $210/month before the next plan with unlimited data, with the next plan, it went down to $180 for a month, then everyone got a new phone and now it's $250.
The reason it's more expensive is b/c instead of settling for the $200 phone with a 2 year contract, you see it as monthly and say "hey this phone is only $4 more a month than this one, and the 64gig phone is only $5 more a month. So instead of getting the equivalent $200 one time fee phone, people are upgrading more often, and paying more than before.

It's just like how a credit card company that offers 0% interest for a year or whatever still somehow is swimming in money.

The smart people save money. They masses of idiots do not.

I can't speak for your bill, everyone's is different. I know my bill would have been maybe a $5 difference, don't remember which way. I chose Next as I'll gladly pay $5 extra(or it may have even been $5 cheaper) to upgrade once per year.

Yea, because so many of those people stay with that company after the initial interest free period. How do you understand that process, but not the Next?

Exactly. But this is not AT&T's fault. It is on the consumer.

b/c no one offers something for less without it actually being less. Just b/c you think you are paying less, which you don't even know if you are or not, doesn't mean the majority of AT&T consumers are.
They make it seem cheaper, and it is if you work it a certain way, but they make it look enticing to upgrade more often, and upgrade to bigger and better phones, something you woudln't have done before b/c you weren't paying $200 more up front just to have a 32gig phone instead of a 16gig, but you have no problem paying an extra $5/month for 2 years to get that extra gig phone.

How can you understand how the credit card company makes money offering 0% interest but can't see how AT&T is making more money doing this?

What do you pay per line, per month? Isn't it $40? Next is actually $25/month cheaper at $15/month so the cost of the phone and service over 2 years is this

$199 + ($40 x 24 mos)= $1,159
or $25/mo for the phone and $15/mo for the service = $40/mo x 24 mos =$960

You save the $199 you paid for the phone and you still get a new phone in 2 years. If not, you're bill goes down to $15/month instead of $40.

ETA: Let's say you keep your phone for 3 years

$199 + ($40 x 36 mos) = $1,639
or
Phone: $25/mo x 30 mos + Service: $15/mo x36 mos= $1,290, or $349 saved.

They know this, and that's why they are making more money with their "cheaper" next plan.

Personally, it does not really seem like a problem. AT&T gets more earnings, and the consumer has a slightly lower cost if they stick with their exact same plan, or they can upgrade to larger phones because of the cash flow the Next plan offers.

If I have an interest free credit card, I'm paying nothing. Why would the credit card company do that, based on your logic?

quote:

and upgrade to bigger and better phones, something you woudln't have done before b/c you weren't paying $200
But I wanted to, and if customers want to upgrade once yearly and not every 2 years, you better appease your customer base or else the next company will.

How can you understand how the credit card company makes money offering 0% interest but can't see how AT&T is making more money doing this?
1. they are on customer retention, just like AT&T, you don't see the similarities?

2. YOU said AT&T is making less, now you're saying they're making more? The entire argument was you saying they're making less, me saying that's not really so. I'm the one saying they're both making money, you said otherwise, but now you're repeating what I said and taking credit for it.

As I mentioned earlier, it's not always 25 dollars cheaper

That's only if you have the 10 GB or higher plan
