No. If the complete cost of the phone is paid off before upgrading (you made it the whole 12, 18 or 24 months, then you owe nothing and can upgrade. If you owe any balance on it when upgrading then you can either pay that balance to keep the device or just turn it back in.

You can pay it off completely and get a new phone or you can pay off ~60% of the cost and trade it in for a new one
Paying it off and reselling it yourself would typically be better

All of the major carriers seems to be switching to that type of plan, see Verizon edge.

For 1, i think it's a ripoff b/c i don't believe a cell phone cost 800 fricking dollars.
For 2, If those of you saying the next plan is cheaper for the consumer than the old plan, why would AT&T do something to make less money?

If you want to keep your old plan just do it online. I went to the store they said they wouldn't do it so I called the 1-800 number and they said I had to switch to Next also. Finally got a guy to tell me if I wanted to keep old plan with unlimited data the only way is to upgrade online.
ETA: He also said that option won't last much longer either. Its about to be only Next plan or you'd have to switch carriers.

Go buy a brand new to the market phone outright on Amazon or Ebay. They often cost more than the carriers sell them for.

I believe the way ATT used to do things is that you would sign a 2 year contract and pay for a discounted phone. I think they used to work in some hidden fee to your account if you did the contract, which is basically what ATT Next is. It seemed like a crap deal for me so I just bought a used phone straight up.

Next and edge plans are more transparent for the customer
My hope is that people see the price of cell phones and maybe the cell phone manufacturers become more competitive with each other and pricing will begin to reflect competition

That also ignores the 199 or 299 plus 40 activation fee paid upfront.

If you think ATT is making too much money off of you by selling a phone for 800, go buy the same phone elsewhere. You can save all the money that ATT was gonna rob you of

This. The old way of doing it is over with. They told me the same thing and that the reason they changed was due to the fact that they were "losing" money off of the phones the way the old plan was set up. Take it for what it's worth.

I don't think anybody said this. The old pay $200 and get a subsidized phone option doesn't exist anymore. The "credit" you were recieving on that program is gone. So now you pay $40/month for data, which is $25/month more than before when you get your "subsidized" phone.
It's either that or next, which is essentially the se damn thing. Why is this so hard for people to comprehend?

The best thing about the new system:
I'm currently paying roughly the same bill for 2 lines as I was on a 2 year contract. This new bill includes ~$65 in phone payments.
If wife and I hold onto these phones for 20 months or whatever it is, my bill goes down $65 no questions asked.
With the old plan, if you didn't upgrade, they just milked you for more money. Most people upgrade asap but a lot of folks don't feel the need to
