I have 3 best friends. One I've known since I was 6 and the other 2 I met through work post college.
The rest of my friends I still keep up with are all from college.

I'm lucky that I'm still close with my small group of friends from high school but the two friends I talk to the most are the ones I met in my last years of college.

I went to a bunch of schools before the two high schools I went to, but my best friends are and will always be the ones I met in high school. The same few have put up with me for this long and not bailed. It can only get better from here, right?
I sporadically lost and got back those ones over the years, but they've always had my back when SHTF

I am an awful friend. If I don't actually see you, I do nothing to keep in touch. I hate the phone calls "What's going on, how have you been?" It feels fake. I have one best friend of 20+ years that no matter how long we go without talking, we pick right back up. I guess one is all the effort I can make. Met her when I was 11.

It really just depends. Pretty much every friend I have I knew I've known from high school or earlier. I fully realize that isn't the norm though probably. My best friend for life I met in HS. The next 2 or 3 in my closest circle I've known from around that time as well. Of the 10 or so people that I would legit call serious, really close, lifelong friends I've known anywhere from HS down to age 7.
