I would dread this... Gotta put him out of his misery... I have two young mini weiner dogs and they are my spark after a long day at work. And they are only 1 1/2 years old... I will dread this day as well. Sorry for what you need to do.........

I am so very sorry. We had to make that decision more than once. Our determining factors were: lack of quality of life, pain, safety (18 year old dog sometimes tripped ans was unable to get up om her own).

This is tough, and only you have the answer to it.

make the decision for HIM and not for you. He is going to going to do what he can to please you, so don't judge him by this. Judge him by behavior such as energy, movement, appetite, etc.

when we put our dog down about 18 months ago (broke our hearts), the vet said afterwards that we made the right decision and most people wait too long in her opinion. She and my wife arent friends but are very friendly and knew each other before she became our vet.

Selfish is letting a dog shite blood for days while a vet tells you to let him go. That's what I responded to.

And I disagree. We don't put people to sleep when they suffer. Had he had no chance of making it I would of had him put down, but he had a chance and didn't make it.

I would do the same thing again.
I didn't want him to die.
I had a thread about it, under my old old screen name.

Similar to what happened with a doberman we had. After surgery to remove a malignant breast tumor, 15-16 more just appeared on her. They drug the ground & hurt her. She looked at us like she thought we could do something for her. The vet said putting her down was the only thing that could be done.

There's no one size fits all answer, but the closest I could come to one would be to take whatever it is the dog loves the most (walks, chasing a ball, steak, etc.) and see when the dog loses interest.

I endorse this response. I read this as an indication that my dog was trying to tell me that it's time to go. It's always very tough to do this, but you can rest easy knowing that you provided him with a good life while he was here. There are a lot of animals that missed out on that blessing.
