At what point to you make the decision to put your dog to sleep?

My golden is 8, and had surgery back in June to remove a mass from his spleen. Turned out to be a pretty aggressive cancer, in it's later stages, and is not known to react to any treatments. Ever since recovering from the surgery, other than being a little more tired on some days than normal, he has been pretty much fine....until this month.
Tumors have started popping up on him EVERYWHERE. Probably has 12-15 total, with a couple being inside his belly area. He has a big one on his front leg, but it's never seemed to really bother him until today. I went home for lunch and he was in a lot of pain...can't put that leg down, yelped and pulled away when I messed with the tumor, can't really get comfortable when he lays down. So I gave him some of his pain meds from the surgery. His appetite is still there, I just don't want him to be in constant pain.
It's breaking my heart, and I want to do the right thing, it's just a tough fricking decision to make.

At that point.

I would say as soon as he stops eating and is in pain. Nothing worse than have a pet suffer. But it is easier for me to say since it isn't my own dog.

As my vet told me, as hard and painful a decision it is, if you have to ask, then it's probably that time. And it sucks.

yeah you answered your question. sorry man.

This sucks. I mean, it kind of just ruined my afternoon, but if you can see that he's not comfortable at all, and know it's not going to get better, it's time to say your goodbyes.

It's the toughest decision because you have to make the call. He can't tell you. Been there before. I guess I'd say when he stops wagging his tail and just looks in pain.
Our lab couldn't get up to go upstairs. My parents had to make the call to put her down.
Best of luck man.

So long as he's still got an appetite, make sure he eats like a king from now on.

About 2 days before that. Then you would have avoided this...

Standard check up vet bills and heart worm medicine are one thing, but my price point is when surgery cost more than a new puppy.

My 12 yr old lab developed a tumor on his leg..we didnt put him down.. it ended up growing the size of a baseball over a year "yes we took to vet" they could do nothing but surgery to amputate. Something not recommended for a 12yr old dog. So he lived with the tumor for over a yr, hopped along, ate, played... then finally one day went out there to feed him and he would not get up to eat... knew it was time. Im sorry for your dog, i have 2 labs now and i am very close to them. When something happes im going to be devistated

Had to put our retriever down this morning. I don't cry often, but damn. It's tough.

This is what I meant you should have done worded in a much more eloquent way.

I can't do it. Man I don't know.
It would be so hard. Yeah I can see when they are in pain, but do will kill people when they are in pain?
I dread this happening. My dog is 8 and I realize I may only have 4-5 more years tops with her.
I had a dog die on my in 2006. Deuce.. I loved that dog, he got HGE which is a stomach illness and he would pour blood from his but.
Vet had him for five days and $2000 in bills. I saw him there the last day and he couldn't even raise his head to look at me. I was asked twice to just let him go.
I refused. Two hours later I got the call that he died.
I released his body to LSU vet school, as the vet at AVS said that was the first time they knew of that a dog that size had contracted HGE.

We don't, but animals aren't people.

Despite that nonsense, you were selfish.
