Meh, professional is simply juxtaposed against amateur. Professionals get paid; amateurs do not. Now, you'll obviously get mocked in certain circles if you call yourself "a professional" in particular contexts, but if you want to call yourself a "professional widget carver", more power to you. If someone is paying you to do it, you're not wrong.

That wasn't always the case, though. That's what I meant.
Look at the etymology of the word. A physician professes the Hippocratic Oath. An accountant professes the tenets of GAAP, and whatever code of ethics accountants profess. There's no whittling code of ethics. You frick up a block of wood, you move on with your life.
