true, it is all relative, I was in Chile years ago, with a Chilean girl, and we got on this tiny arse elevator, which a lot of them are, and I asked her why they're so small, she just said, maybe it's because the rest of the world doesn't put a premium value on personal space that you Americans do

I'm a mom, and it sounds weird to me. If it were just the daughter's back and shoulders, it wouldn't be weird, but I think it would give me the heebie jeebies to see what you described.
1. It was a spray, so no need to rub it in.
2. Daughter had a friend with her. Why not get the friend to do it?

Well for the record, sounds untoward to me as well. Not saying the old man was getting a charge off of it, but appearances matter.
