[quote]I'm way too stupid to understand bitcoin/cryptcurrencies, BUT... it strikes me as very strange that a lot of people who rail against the Fed/its digital printing press and used to be in the hard assets goldbug alt economic camp have moved on to something even more...abstract/intangible.

there are ceilings and ledgers for crypto's. I know the ceiling, I have access to the ledgers. how do you divide a penny?

If I were to invest say $200 today, would you suggest Bitcoin or Ethereum?

I’m extremely jealous of your total.

I bought as many as I could afford starting in 2008 (but i was a broke college student at the time). I assume the friend of mine who got me started has a similar total to you and he made me feel better when he told me that what I have is more than anyone who didn’t buy when it was dirt cheap.

I don't care about the haters, I'm sick to my stomach for ignoring it when it was being discussed back when they were around $10.

Based on current prices, I would do $50 Bitcoin and $150 Ethereum. But I'm not an expert.

My thinking is that because Ethereum is still under $500, your money is able to aquire a much larger percentage. Which means as it grows you will earn more in the long run.

The miniscule percentage of bitcoin you can buy for $200 doesn't leave you with as much space for growth in the long term. Ethereum has a strong growth potential in the future. It's not currently growing as fast because it doesn't have the name brand reputation Bitcoin does. But as more people start trying to dip their toes into crypto-currencies because of Bitcoin's extreme growth in the last year, lesser known currencies like Ethereum, Litecoin, and Iota will start gaining momentum.

Amazon will accept a cyrpto currency someday

You mean as payment for purchases? They already do, and actually give you a small discount on an item's listed price if you use Bitcoin.

Maybe 3rd party retailers on their site, but the next big move is Amazon accepting bitcoin. Which was expected to happen before the end of the year, but hasnt.

More real than Bitcoin. A lot more.

Why? Because some dude said some shiny rock had some intrinsic value and some other dude said, "Hey...I would like a shiny rock too?"

I don't accept bitcoin is the future. No one else here does either. They still have their money safe in a bank and are only "investing" what they can lose.

E-currency is likely the future, but sorry I don't buy into it being valued as anything other than speculative.

I do wish I had put money into bitcoin. But I didn't then for the same reason as now. I think it will likely collapse since it has major flaws and competition.

I haven’t put much effort into looking into it, but I just can’t wrap my head around the fact that something intangible like bitcoin, can be worth actual money

Might be a stupid question, but how did bitcoin even start?

That’s from the bitcoin wiki... wtf is this? Sounds like a video game

I wish I played closer attention to what exactly Bitcoin was. When it first came out I simply thought it was something you had to mine for. It sounded more like a hobby or video game achievement system.

Never did I realize that it was something that could be outright bought.

This is very similar to when electricity started being studied.

Until the motor, lights and distribution systems were worked out, it was tough to comprehend the use for electricity. Except the innovators (ending now) and early adopters (starting now).

The adaptation curve will be much faster.
