Ha, only those of a certain age, I imagine. Loved those guys. Only comics from my teens that I still have somewhere in the house.

If this is more proof, where's all the other proof?

These articles make it out like astronomers have "little idea" how to explain these things, but what that usually means is they have lots and lots of ideas and more research is needed to narrow it down to the most likely explanation.

In this case, it seems pretty obvious that this object(s) didn't form along with the rest of the solar system, and instead it was just flying around and was captured by the sun's gravity.

No. They don't. They need a different explanation for each planet.

When I read the headline I thought it might have been the Black Knight satellite coming back home.

Kind of, but no, not really.

The explanations are "different" for each planet mainly due to the temperature and gravity gradient in which each planet formed. In other words, the same "soup" of material will form a different type of planet depending on temperature and the influence of gravity, solar wind, etc.

In general, though, the explanation is the same for all of them: a cloud of material condensed and accumulated over time into individual planets. That's all there is to it, there is no other viable explanation.

The fact that the planets appear wildly different from one another shouldn't bother you at all. Water and ice look and behave significantly different, but the only difference there is a very minute variation in temperature. Another slight temperature increase (cosmically speaking) results in water becoming a gas and possibly leaving the planet entirely, resulting in an enormous difference in the way the rest of the planet evolves. And that's just water. Every element/molecule behaves differently at different temperatures, and it should be plain to see that planets can be made of a very similar mixture of material yet end up looking vastly different.

Just think about it.
