I was in NYC last weekend and saw some sketchy arse people down in the subway. I didn’t feel unsafe however I would stand away from the platform for that very reason.

They need to kick the homeless out of the stations. When it’s cold you see it at almost every station and Times Square may be the worst. If they were more strict about it, they would mostly stop hanging out in the stations and go be crazy elsewhere.

Unless the system is automated, the trains are never going to stop in exactly the same spots. So the margin for error you would have to leave would leave you with more gaps than rails.
There are tons of signs telling people to stay away from the tracks until the trains come to a stop. Yet, people still crowd around.

Seems like places like Denver aiport and DFW airport have trains that line up perfectly with the doors everytime. I imagine it could theoretically be done on a larger scale.

WMATA has talked about doing this for Metro in DC and the cost is astronomical. Given how much graft and waste there is in any Metro construction project, it's never going to happen.
