Asbestos in house

HVAC unit leaked and flooded my hardwood floors in my hallway. Insurance company sent a crew to clean/dry water and check for mold on underside of flooring. I get a call today from the Forman who said when they were removing the 1x4 sub floor they found what he believed is asbestos. Won't know for sure until they send it off and test it.
Anyone else experienced this with a house. The house was built in 1976 and we purchased and remolded in 2002

I have seen asbestos in the popcorn ceiling. Easy to get that stuff tested. The house was roughly the same age
If the contractor has any chance of benefiting from the remediation costs, I would get a sample and get it tested yourself at a local lab. There area couple places that do it near the seigen industrialplex

Asbestos is common in building materials produced before 1986.

If the floors are already wet, he could just wet the asbestos down when removing it. No big deal and no expensive bill

Nah, it's really not that bad. It won't do anything unless you break it and the fibers get airborne and then into your lungs. That's why you can spray it with water to properly remove it.

Without knowing pretty much anything it sounds like it's going to be expensive.
You should contact one of the inspection companies. I used to work for AES a long time ago but they are one of a few companies that should be able to help you out.

In all seriousness, dont worry, unless they have to rip it out.
I worked in a school once and one thing I learned was as long as the asbestos is undisturbed you are fine.
But the cost to remove it is hefty.

So I assume by reading the above posts, that if I cut the boards with a skill saw it becomes a hazard? Even wearing a mask won't prevent it from entering my lungs?

Yes, cutting with a saw will cause an exposure hazard. Even with a dust mask.
