I've just inherited a Lionel train set from I guess around the 1949-52 time frame...

it's been stored for sometime around 60 years everything was meticulously wrapped up, but I know I'm going to have to unwrap and clean things up before trying to run it

not planning on using the transformer that came with it as I have one that should work very well...

what should I do with the locomotive before I try to run it? then some of the cars do neat stuff, like the dairy car that loads/unloads milk cans...

can anyone offer any first hand knowledge (besides go to the train shop in Ponchatula)?

thanks...

I would think taking lots of pictures of it would be a good idea. Before you burn it up and all

Clean it (vacuum) (pipe cleaners) and lubricate.

It sounds like you shouldn't have any problems running it, but I agree about not using the vintage transformer. Maybe hit it with some compressed air to get any dust and dirt out of the gears. Other than that, I say fire it up. I had my old man's Lionel train when I was a kid; probably around the same timeframe as yours but I had mine in the 80's. It ran great.

They have a regional model train club.

But with any brush style motor, just a healthy spray if electric contacts cleaner should be all you need to clean the electronics.
Some light mineral oil can be applied to the joints of moving parts.

I had a set in the 60's and the milk car was amazing. That and putting the smoke pellets in the engine. Thanks for the memory reminder!!
