As we all relax this weekend, take a moment to remember why we have Memorial Day weekend

It's easy to forget why we have this holiday because so many people are more worried about high noon or posting an Instagram photo from the beach than remembering those who have died for this country. Every Memorial Day weekend I read a letter written by Sullivan Ballou sent to his wife before he was killed at the First Battle of Bull Run during the Civil War.
I'll post a few snippets here, but I encourage you to read the whole thing.

quote:
My very dear Sarah: The indications are very strong that we shall move in a few days — perhaps tomorrow. Lest I should not be able to write again, I feel impelled to write a few lines that may fall under your eye when I shall be no more … I have no misgivings about, or lack of confidence in the cause in which I am engaged, and my courage does not halt or falter. I know how strongly American Civilization now leans on the triumph of the Government and how great a debt we owe to those who went before us through the blood and sufferings of the Revolution. And I am willing — perfectly willing — to lay down all my joys in this life, to help maintain this Government, and to pay that debt

maybe you should tell this to all the businesses out there giving an additional 10% off to all veterans this weekend in celebration of Memorial Day.
seems like there's a day for vets. what's it called?...let me think.....let me think.....hmmm
I understand the sentiment but I don't think they really have a clue

There's a phot on the internet, previously widely circulated, that I can't find, mea culpa, showing a prostate woman laying face down on a blanket next to her husband's grave, her young child next to her. Words don't work near enough, but it is true picture of what Memorial Day is all about. Hundreds of graves are all around this one. Imagine a similar scene next to each one, all over the country / world.

Dude wasn’t virtue signaling. He was bringing something interesting to the board. I, for one found it interesting and appreciate it. Unlike you. Seems like you’re in a bad mood, so go kick a pig or two.

A post I made two years ago;
Two friends who died at age 24 in Viet Nam. May they rest in peace.
SGT James Edwin Melvin Jr.
First Lieutenant Charles Davis

Thankfully, only one relative, an ancestor, died in combat in any documents I've seen. RIP Brig Gen, Jean Jacques Alexandre Mouton. Only two uncles didn't serve in WWII, one was not of age, and another sickly since birth. Two didn't serve in war zones, including dad three served in combat. Dad, USN, was in combat over a full year before the US entered it.
