Yes, but it isn't new for me. I'm also barely out of my 20s.
Army still trains pilots with High School Diploma only for education. You do have to pass a physical and a 4 hour aviation knowledge test, that is how I went in in '68
Warrant Officer Flight Training WOFT - Great rank, good pay, no formations :)

I'm actually going through the motions right now. Hopefully it will all work out. I'll be 31 this month.
Going through the motions of enlisting? If so, what are the prospects for a 31 year old entering the military? I'm curious.

Have you considered how much that would cost?
don't have the numbers, but weighed against the costs of other gov't freebies available, legal costs, unemployment, etc., I imagine it would at least be a wash

i wonder if the quality of the military would go up or down if everyone was required to do 2 years. You'd get a lot of duds, but also a lot of the best and brightest who wouldnt otherwise consider it.

It would be tough to be away from the kids, though.
Dude, you are not really considering this.

I'm pretty fit now, so I don't think that would be a problem
Its not even a fit thing for me, though round is a shape. My knees and ankles are just shot.

I'm looking at opportunities to join JAG. Prospects can be good if you're the right caliber, I suppose.

I think 2-4 year mil service at reaching 18 should be mandatory.
Not really practical for the needs of the modern military. Most countries are going away from the concept of a conscript army. By the time a kid gets enough training and experience to be useful, he's on his way out the door.
Expand it to national service in general-forest conservation, teaching illiterate adults to read, whatever-and you may be on to something.

If I could do it over again, I'd go into the Air Force as a pilot.
thats way more than a 4 year commitment out of high school. you spend 4 years in training before you get to start flying on your own, then you have to spend another few years in service. you also have to have a college degree I believe.

Of course the more I hear of the military of today and it's lower standards and political correctness, the more I believe the military I belonged to in the 80's & 90's no longer exists.

I thought the Army abandon this program recently.

I'd have been pretty shitty soldier material. Don't think I'd have helped our cause much.

the Viet Nam era conscriptees are considered to have been the most educated/brightest enlisted group in our history

I've always said if I was of age to do so when 9-11 happened I would have joined

I've actually been thinking about it for years. I have always felt like it would be something I would regret if I didn't do it.
