re: As a taxpayer, would you be willing to increase police pay?

If officers were required by law to wear cameras at all times I'm not sure what the police union could do about it really.
I'm not in favor of easy termination but I am in favor of aggressive prosecution of bad cops. Going to jail should be the immediate recourse for abuse of power, assault, etc.

Better pay means you can raise the standards. Then you have quality individuals as police officers, and better results.
You can't raise the pay without raising the standards.

This won't do anything. They'll have "malfunctioned" anytime shite hit the fan. Not to mention make them rage internally even more since they'd be forced to wear it.

Good Cops love cameras.
The biggest issue you have is the difference in pay. In Mississippi for example Biloxi and Gulfport cops make over 50 a year with Ot and all their equipment is provided while other towns close make half that and half worse equipment. Who do you think gets better candidates and has better officers? Gulfport and Biloxi also have higher standards

Ok, first of all, Brainiac. Nobody put unions in place for the purpose of protecting rouge[sic] cops.
The problem with at will for police is that anytime they arrest a politically connected person they will get fired.

How much is starting pay for BRPD?
Posted on 10/7/14 at 7:58 am to lsu xman
Brpd is the highest paid and worst trained officers so no.
Most officers couldn't pass the yearly pt if they had one.
Most officers don't go through higher level training that larger depts required
They cannot even manage traffic during LSU football games or country fest.
This shows how just one divisions not properly trained.
Don't show them how to use a total station with scanner to investigate traffic accidents and other investiagtions they are lost.
The EBRPSO is paid less but actually work or can be fired at will.
EBRPSO Yes they do deserve an increase
They also pay mileage to drive their vehicles home
BRPD no (until changes are made)
They also need to make brpd pass yearly pt test
Pay mileage for personal use
Drop union
Can be fired at will
Police chief elected by the people of baton rouge
They try to scare you by saying union does this or that.
Funny other large depts where the depts have gone to a metro have better sucess rates. Reason no union to protect lazy cops.

I think a small town or two should test this out, I think it could be a sweeping reform program that could be employed all throughout the country.
So a small town would be an appropriate pilot for a major city?

Your OP seems to suggest that greater accountability and more transparency would increase the general citizenry's confidence in its police force, but I'm not sure that would do it. Although the mandates you mentioned would for sure not be detrimental/would help, IMO, the militarization of local law enforcement is the real problem. Since that problem was ultimately taxpayer funded, so I'd be very careful/wary of ANYTHING that sent more money their way.....it always seems to be spent on toys that get used to take away the rights of the citizenry that paid for them.

I would vote to increase police pay, however, this increase must have limits on the bureaucracy within the department. Too many times, friends of the chief, get high paying jobs sitting on a desk, cause they have had too much of the bullshoot they have to deal with on the street and just want to ride out last couple of years until retirement. But the guys who do fight the garbage everyday, I support you 100%!

We are not militarized. Yes we have military equipment, but not for everyday events. Our SWAT teams have that, but it is response to criminals having officers out gunned in the 80s. We all carry rifles now because of the LA bank robbery. I have never used mine and I hope I don't. The equipment we use everyday hasn't changed much though.
Do you want coastal departments with equipment to save you or your family during a hurricane? That is why we all bought military trucks. They are rarely used though. Parades and hurricanes pretty much.

I would agree that good cops like cameras; and I do think they would help clarify situations for the good cops out there.
I guess my line of thinking was, it won't necessarily prevent bad cops from being bad cops.

Not at all. Scumbags will always be scumbags and the ones that have a badge are the worst ones.

Until they quit with the predatory DWI checkpoints/inspection sticker bullshite then the answer is absolutely NOT.

Don't quote me on this, but I remember reading an article in the Advocate which stated there were around 7 checkpoints in 2011. That number jumped to over 100 in 2013. $$$$$$$$$$$. frick them.

It has been a few years, but I bet the tax payer would rather an officer out on the street making rounds.
Checkpoints are nothing more than a dog and pony show with social media letting people know where they are.
BRPD needs to turn into a metro police similar to Los Vegas, Miami, and Nashville for the whole parish controlled by an elected chief or sheriff.
I also think yearly Physical Fitness test should be required.
