I love how the anchor discusses it in the present tense.

OP is a bit deceptive, the Corps purposefully demolished the gantry crane.

Cut her some slack. The ignorant bastards at KFVS also misspelled "Olmsted." They probably all graduated from journalism school at Mizzou.

Without clicking on the link, I imagine if the US government paid $9.5M, I could probably go down to Cranes R Us and get the same one for about $10k

Nope, you're wrong. Cranes R Us closed down last year.

What exactly is the point in destroying it?

5100 pound capacity, now that's impressive.

Olmsted Locks and Dam has been completed so the Corps of Engineers does not need the crane anymore. Olmsted will replace Locks and Dams 52 and 53 on the Ohio River. L&D 52 was the busiest in the United States. Oh, and the COE completed the Olmsted project only 30 years late and $2.25 BILLION over budget.

I know, right?

This is a massive sized crane specifically built to assemble, move, lift sections of the dam. The largest of which weighed 4,700 tons.
Oh, it's cool. The journalist and editors are just idiots.
