Aristocratic old line New Orleans krewes. What's it all about?

What is the old New Orleans aristocracy all about?
What is the point of having these highly exclusive old line krewes? I'm talking about the ones that don't even ride. What's the point? Don't get me wrong, I'm all for it. I think it's awesome cultcha. I am just trying to understand.
And yes this is a spinoff from the guy melting in the DC Mardi Gras thread.

Some folks like the pagantry of it all and do stuff all year round with different events. These high end exclusive clubs are probably mostly people who are third and fourth generation members so the family aspect is something they like.
I'm sure the business networking is pretty solid as well.
I sometimes attend a ball for one of the non riding groups. It's not exclusive by any means, but it is at the New Orleans Country club and the food and drinks are good.

Well they used to ride until whatshername decided they were racist. Now, they probably just enjoy the feeling of belonging to an exclusive social club, the elite core of a once-great city.

Almost certainly this. I mean, technically Comus is the most prestigious of the krewes even without riding since 1991.

Interestingly enough, Comus and Momus are more bloodline than money, though many are old money. Also, many are dual members in these two and Rex.
The Momus and Comus parades were still using steel wheeled floats and flambeauxs til their end and were not exactly the greatest parades, as far as throws and beautiful floats go. Just traditional.

Tulane coeds are from the Northeast, they probably abhor the Southern aristocracy.
Loyola coeds are too busy turning Lez and piercing body parts to worry about Mardi Gras swinging parties...

You're thinking the Krewe of Tuscaloosa. They throw useless trinkets like shoes, books, and utensils. Fans have been known to park their homes on the parade route a week in advance.

If memory serves correct they were post Civil War, during the North's occupation of the South, in this case New Orleans. They were secret societies of the city's aristocracy-hence 'old money and bloodlines' - exclusive and fairly closed membership. They waited out the North's occupation and maintained the city's ruling status quo....or so I have read, the old Mardi Gras museum in Kenner
