A lot of people buy acreage to launder money, hide money from the IRS etc.

it borders Glacier National Park, a mile from the entrance. They just bought it before the boom during Covid. They’d never sell it or they’d have to over my dead body

I’ll be going to Glacier next year.

I was once told that if you own land, own 1 acre or less, or 20 acres or more. Everything in between is just mowing. I'm on the first. Planning for the second.

I would say instead of 20 go to 100.

I have a 150 tract that is about 40 acres of pasture. It has a house on it but we are going to build another.

Some things I would advise from my experiences:

timber sucks—-hurricanes are tough on it and old timber sucks more than 20 year old stuff as there are very few markets for it

don’t skimp on your first tractor and have at least two—I have a 115hp JD cab tractor for most work and a 55 horse open cab old Mahindra I use for spraying and tight bush hog work

don’t skimp on chain saws—forget the bar length and concentrate on the motor size —70cc plus—you will be very happy you spent the extra money

the hunting public includes a few people that will think your property should be open to them for hunting—they will contrive BS reasons why they are trespassing simply to shoot a deer. I could shoot 20 a year but i doubt i will shoot any this year—there is not a lot of sport in it for me

hogs are hard to get rid of

you need someone to help that you can depend on

i love my place but just wanted to point out some thing

went last spring as soon as the park was open and Logan Pass cleared. Spent a week in an AirB&B in Kalispell and drove into the park everyday. Could have spent a month there and still not hiked all the trails

Will be going back.

Honestly some of the housing didn’t seem super insane pricing compared to other desirable areas around many national parks.

It’s gotten to the point where I don’t give a shite about deer hunting. I just want to kill as many of those god forsaken hogs as I can.

I have no desire for acreage. I live on .25 acres in the city even though we have a 5k acre farm an hour away. I get out there about once a year.

Eta: wish family would sell it, I’d rather have the $$$

Message Are you wanting acreage? by Toucan Sam It seems so many people these days are wanting acreage. But why?

If you live long enough you will get your answer. I’m not explaining it to you if you do not already know.

best inheritance ever. Could your parents talk to my parents and convince them this is a good idea? currently I will be inheriting 20 acres in Labadieville. We are not the same.

My dad has 6 acres in Montana. He has talked about selling it recently though. I hope he doesn't.

Our pre-retirement move does not include acreage. We are now looking at acreage for actual retirement so we could have extra area for kids or extended family who wants to live near us or visit.

We plan on buying or building one more house. Neither of us want it to be in a neighborhood. I wouldn't mind having a few acres but I want my yard area to be something I can cut with a zero turn in an hour or two.

We came very close to buying an old motel in Wisconsin which had a house on the property also. Like a boutique motel/airbnbs just for family

If we buy a larger parcel it will be a multiple small houses/cabins situation.

No plans for a family compound. We just don't enjoy living right on top of other people anymore

that is how I grew up so it is fine. I don't prefer to live near people I don't know.

Since we grew up that way we visit alot so more than likely the extra homes would not have permanent residents but many visitors throughout the year. I laugh about wanting to have grandmas summer camp. Send me all the babies for a vacation.
