Without scrolling down, May 19th. Only date that isn't listed twice. Simple as that

some of the most confident answers have been the most wrong

its not May 19th or June 18th

those are the easiest 2 to rule out

The only way for Albert to KNOW that Bernard does not know the date is for the Cheryl's birthday to be in July or August as May and June both have unique numbers that could POSSIBLY reveal Cheryl's birthday to Bernard.

That means the number Cheryl gave Bernard must be 14, 15, 16, or 17.

If Cheryl told Bernard it was the 14th, Bernard still would not know as both of the available months have 14 as a number.

Given that Bernard now knowing the birth date allow Albert to also know the birth date, we can deduce that month he was provided by Cheryl was July and his only question was whether the number was 14 or 16. With 14 being removed as a possibility, he knows Cheryl's birthday is July 16.

I am not seeing how she couldn't have just said her bday was the 19th to the one guy and he immediately said he knew the month because the 19th is listed one time

Because the guy that knows the date, Bernard, is stated to not know the full birthday. If she told him it was on the 19th, then he would know immediately because it is only listed once. That is also the reason that June 18 is wrong, thus eliminating May and June.

June 18th, it's the only date with the day being the 18th. If she told one of them the day, then it is easy to figure out from those 10 options. Am I missing something?

ETA: yes I am missing something. I just realized that there was a 19th as well.

So then it would be June 17th since the one guy knows the month, and they know it isn't June 18th, because Bernard would have guessed right away. That's the only answer that's been singled out. I don't really understand how much the two can communicate and how this works. Can they cross out possibilities so the other knows which one's it is not? Or why wouldn't one just say hey it's june, and the other say its the 17th

Yes. The subsequent statement that Albert does not know the birthday, but Bernard doesn't as well. If it had been one of those days, Bernard would know right away.

Not if she said the month and day at separate times. The month would not give it away, but the day would.

June 18? Arrived at my answer through process of elimination, fewest mentions for both...

But May is still in play, as Bernard could know that the date is the 15th or 16th and those options are still available in July or August. Hell, It could still be June as he would only know 17 and there are multiple months still on the board with the 17th

Albert is told only the month

Bernard is told only the day

The answer is July 16

This question is SO EASY, even an Auburn fan can READ and SOLVE it.

Says more than KajunGator

No because Albert could not know that Bernard doesn't have the answer with May 19. If Bernard was told the 19th, Bernard would know the birthday making point 1 invalid.

I got it but it took too long. I should have known immediately because it is my sister's b-day and she is a bitch too.

Ah, I gotcha. I read that as she told one guy the date and not a specific guy the date. Lost in translation I guess

I honestly appreciate the discourse.

quote:

Taking this one statement at a time

agree and it is only the first step I am contesting

quote:

1) A says that he knows that B does not know C's bday. The only way he can make this statement is if the month is July or August. If the month was May or June, A could not be certain that B doesn't know the exact date, since both of those have unique numbers.

I was hung up because I was missing that A was definitively saying B did not know before B had spoken and that declaration is what told B that May and June were non options.

after you get to only July and August the rest is obvious.

Thanks, my bad.

There are some dumb-dumbs in this thread. July 16th is not super hard to come up with. I will admit, that I got stuck for a while after crossing out May and June. But the trick was realizing that both of them knew the answer with three possible choices left.
