Are Volvos still quality cars?
The older ones prior to about 2004 or so were bulletproof - when they were purely a Swedish company. I had a 96 850 station wagon as my first car and I couldn’t kill that thing if I tried.
The newer ones are still extraordinarily safe, but have a myriad of issues.

A friend of mine bought a Volvo at the same time I bought a Venza, about 2010. He thought I was an idiot, it took him about 2 years to change his mind. Constant electrical issues with the Volvo.

I'm done with European cars, too expensive to repair and seemingly always in need of it...... Also they are now Chinese owned, China is asshoe.

I was really close to picking up a 2016 XC70 a couple weeks back as Carvana offered me a substantial amount on my TDI Sportwagen and I really liked the wagon’s utility and practicality as a commuter car. Thought I’d probably go the same route, but a little bigger with the Volvo. Reviews seem really mixed. Most owner reviews were great and no one ever seemed to have an issue with reliability. Check out the SwedeSpeed forum if you want to know what all to look for. Do a Google search for “Volvo READ issues,” too. Doesn’t affect all engines, but something to be aware of.
Ultimately, I settled on a crew cab Nissan Frontier SL. Needed a truck, albeit I’m going to lose a lot of mpgs on the work drive. Nonetheless, I’m not regretting the decision yet.

Volvo isn't bad when compared to Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Lincoln, and Genesis.
It sucks when compared to Toyota and Lexus though.

We’ve had several and have never had any reliability issues. Only had one that required more than “normal” maintenance. That was a faulty driver info module at 125k miles. If I recall I got a refurbished one for about $1000 and swapped it myself.
We currently have:
2020 S60
2010 XC90
We had:
2001 XC70
2003 XC70
2004 S60
It always made me feel better knowing my wife and kids were in such a safe vehicle. My son is now driving the XC90 and I’m trying to convince my daughter to get a Volvo when she starts driving later this year.
Not many people like the wagons but the 2 XC70s we had were our favorites. The 01 we gave to a niece a couple years ago when she was having car/financial troubles and she still drives it. If I could track down the 03 we had I would buy it back. My wife still complains that I made her get a new car and traded it in 2016 for a new Highlander. She hated the Highlander so much after 8 months she found out a neighbor was selling the 01 and she bought it and sold the Highlander.

SPA Volvos are light years better than the Ford produced version just prior. Scalable Product Architecture platforms are designed for reliability, and Geely invested over a billion dollars to get it right.

100% true; but I can understand staying away from Volvo because they are owned by China now.

We used to have a S60 and never had a problem with it. Can't say the same for my 5 month old 2021 Tahoe.

We have a 2018 XC90. It had one repair because the seat wasn't adjusting right. They gave us a loaner for a day and they fixed it under warranty.
Other than that, it's been a good car.

Volvo and Mercedes make the safest cars in the world.
As the saying goes, ‘Volvo invents the safest features, then Mercedes copies them’.
From a safety perspective, those 2 are the kings of the road.

Owned by a Chinese citizen. Chinese people aren’t inherently bad people, and if they are producing a quality product, who cares? I realize Apple is an American company, but I don’t see anyone eager to give up their products over their mostly Chinese manufacturing.

Which means a forced partnership with the CCP. It’s very much a Chinese company.

They moved from manual transmissions, cloth seats and crank up windows to complicated electronics. Their quality and reliability plummeted.
There’s a huge market for such cars, but our idiot politicians have essentially made building such simple and reliable vehicles illegal. A new build VW classic bug would fly off the lots if priced right. But everything has to be over-complicated and expensive.

We had a 2010's Volvo s60 that ran 120k miles with 0 issues. Was fantastic

Leased an XC90 and bought it off of the lease. It was a great car but once it was out of warranty, any time I would bring it to an indy shop to get some work done they looked at me like I had three heads. Most places would not touch it.
Owned a BMW after that and had similar experiences but Volvo was actually worse.

Have a 2016 XC60 that we got brand new. AC went out at right about 3 years and 45k miles. The other minor, but annoying issue is the computer constantly alerts that the tire pressure is low, even after Volvo techs/mechanics check that the pressure is good and recalibrate. This just my experience though
