are v6 trucks worth buying to pull a boat?

i have always been a "it better have a v8 or im not buying it" type
but todays used truck martket seems to be mostly v6 trucks so its pretty hard to find a v8 in trucks now days unless you buy new or buy used at nearly new truck prices
i can get a v6 truck for $4k but the same mileage and age truck with a v8 is $10k
so im wondering if v6 are really the under powered wimps as i have always thought, or did they improve them enough to have enough power to pull a small bay boat with?
last v6 truck i had was a 4.3 v6 chevy way back in 98 and it was weak going up bridges and the valves clattered like hell doing it. im just wondering if they have a lot more power today or are they still under powered for a truck?

What years are you looking at?
Today's V6's are a whole different ball game to the ones from the before about 2010.

What kind/size of boat? What about the trailer?

What motor and year is the truck. What is the weight of the boat (wet) including the trailer?

IT'S NOT THE PULL POWER IT'S THE STOPPING POWER.

It’ll pull it down the road fine. Good luck pulling it up the launch though.

I went from a 6.2L V8 (405 hp, 317 lb torque to a 3.5L TT(375hp 470lb torque)truck and so far it's been a little more sluggish off the line. Thinking about adding a programmer to give it a little more boost.
Haven't had the chance to pull anything yet.

I wouldn't advise it not only because it's underpowered but also because you'll likely need to put electric brakes on the boat trailer.
My Son burned up his first Jeep Cherokee that I bought him pulling our ski boat. Plus he wore out a couple of sets of brakes in the process.
You pull boats in the summertime.
We live in the South.
It's hot in the South in the summer.
That's bad for your engine and your brakes.
Just mho from experience.

You should be able to find plenty of v8s in this range.

If you’re looking at trucks that old, you’ll have to get a V8 to pull a boat like that. A V6 in a truck from that era will pull itself around and not much else.

You said this then said you aren't looking at a truck from today but one closer to the 1998. The 4.3l in the trucks in the era you are looking at have basically the same power as the 4.3 in 98. While a fresh one would move a ~3500 pound boat and trailer OK one with a lot of miles may very well struggle. Consider a current Camry v6 has more horsepower AND torque.

not in a regular cab (no extension or back seat)
now the crew cabs and king cab 4 seaters all have v8s but thats not what im buying
in the last 4 weeks of looking i found only 2 regular cab v8s and both are in the 300k miles range and even then they wanted $9k and $10k with trashed interiors and full of dents, one even had blistering rust busting through the back bed rail and the guy would only drop the price $500
thats why im wondering if a v6 could manage but it sounds like little has changed. my last v6 truck was like that, flat road does fine but bridges and at the launch it could barely pull the load

Of course
My dad had two Carolina skiffs growing up and he pulled them with a 96 4cyl S10

I have a V8 4Runner and a buddy of mine just bought a new one with V6. The 6 is no slouch but the 8 notably more powerful. Calculated (not on board computer displayed) MPG is within 1 mpg, so I'll keep my V8 thankyouverymuch!

my old man used to tow his bass boat with a 4cyl s10 every weekend when I was a kid. It got the job done, but it took like 5 minutes to reach 65 mph.

The 4.3 is slow.

I hear you, that's why I drive a Tundra, 4runner is wife's rig. which is almost identical to the 4runner drivetrain for the model years I have.
