I just ate part of the stem and part of the cap. Tasted like mushroom, slight lingering bitterness. Nothing tingly though.

Could be Armillaria tabescens which is edible. Could be Jack-O-Lanterns. If it's the latter, you're gonna have a bad night.
Extremely idiotic to eat wild mushrooms btw, they are notoriously hard to ID even by seasoned eyes.

They dont appear to be of the hallucinating variety..

They appear to be Armillariella Tabescens (ringless honey mushroom). Will have a white spore print. They are edible and very good (I sauté them. Also blanch and freeze some). Let your wife eat some first and check her reaction before you eat them.
