I think it's a good idea to send thank you notes. If nothing else it lets the person that gave the gift especially at the wedding know you did receive it.

We have continued to get them so at least some people are continuing to send them.
Most people think I am a little nuts because I send a handwritten thank you for even the small gifts I receive, even Christmas gifts from close family. I even write my wife thank you notes for gifts she gives me.

The last two weddings I've been to I gave gifts and cash to each and spent over $500 each time without receiving a thank you card.

Friend,
Thank you letters should be a joyful expression of gratitude that connects you with another in a way that a spoken or typed word never can. They should not be used only for physical gifts like birthday or wedding gifts. Whenever a person enters my mind and I gave thanks to God for him or her, I immediately go to my writing desk to write a letter of thanks to the person.
I cannot recall the last day I did not write a thank you letter to someone. Most days I write several. Today I wrote a thank you card to a friend I have not see in many years simply because a picture of him eating at Uncle’s 2013 lobster steam fell out of a photo album I was moving.
Expressions of gratitude, especially in written form, are good for the writer and the recipient. So many problems would be fixed and chasms overcome if we became more grateful and showed it through action each day.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

I don’t care if I get a thank you note. Actually I’d rather not get one so the person sending it isn’t wasting money on stationary and postage thats going into the trash anyway
+1
I cannot care less if someone sends me a thank you card. The fact that it’s expected kind of defeats the entire purpose of showing gratitude.

Don't send me one but tell me directly. A little bit of time and a savings of money

A short thank you is always appreciated.
Think about it, in everyone's own world their time is the most valuable, so when I get note someone has handwritten to me, I look at it as kind of special. I even save them now.

Nothing wrong with that.
People def remember your kindness for taking the time to do it.
Several years ago I had a manager from another division of our company travel with me to show me some vendor shops and help introduce me to folks.
I sent him a thank you card and that old guy must have really appreciated that because he talked me up to people all the time and eventually helped me get a promotion.
Had some friends of friends come hang out with us at our Mardi Gras spot one year. The wife mailed us a thank you note. They are now welcome anytime for parades and have become friends

For a wedding like OP describes the person sending the notes are in more of a factory worker mentality to try to get them out because “that’s what you are supposed to do”.

The last graduation check I sent to a relative, I didn't get a thank you note. I don't send checks any more.

When parents let kids stop saying yes sir and yes ma'am, society started downhill.

I will tell you my partners daughter got married a few years back. She is conceited like her mother.
We gave them $750 cash. We received a copy of thank you note she scribbled out. Non-specific, just a general thank you note that she obviously made copies of and sent out to everyone.
If you are going to do a thank you note, then do one. If you aren't then don't. A half assed attempt is actually rather insulting. Would have been better for them to not send out thank you notes.
That's my opinion and stay the frick off my lawn.

What did your 'partner' think of it?
You should have framed it and hung it on the wall.

I don’t give gifts with any expectations.

I don’t give gifts to people in the expectation of receiving a thank you note for it. I’m give gifts to people I like and I hope they enjoy them.
